This lesson allows students to explore scale drawings by creating a new drawing based on scale factors. Students are given a shape and a scale factor and then must create the enlarged or reduced shape. This lesson also includes hint cards to prompt students that may be stuck. To finish the lab, students will make connections between the area and scale factor of the figures.

This worksheet and protocol allow for students to have a stronger understanding of parts of a circle and circumference of circles. There is also a section at the end for students to draw circles using a compass. If compasses are not available, they can use a ruler. I recommend that students engage in the questions by doing the teammates consult protocol: Students sit facing each other in groups of 3-4. A cup is put in the center of each team’s table. It is always my goal to get students out of their seats during the class period. I love to allow my students to discover new concepts and then follow up the investigation with a mini-lesson. I am a teacher at an EL Learning school and I am always looking for real world applications of math to apply to our units of study.
