This is a flowchart that I display for students to use as a guide when taking a test. Think of the green, yellow and red background as beginning the test, during the test and finishing the end of the test.
This activity helps students discover the distributive property by relating it first to real life. This would make a great cooperative learning activity or could be assigned for students to work on independently. This is intended to be used when introducing students to the distributive property for the first time, but could also be used as a re-teaching tool. Answer key included.
This activity is great for practicing simplifying variable expressions. All problems include the variables of m, a, t and h (you may want to point out to students that the 't' has a slight curl at the bottom compared to an addition symbol). To go further with this activity, you can then have students create and simplify similar problems involving the letters of their name, the name of your school, their favorite color/sports team/musical artist, etc...
This is the perfect assignment to use after first introducing the Order of Operations. Includes problems where students make mistakes by breaking the Order of Operations. Some of these problems could lead to good discussions about common wrong answers the next day in class. Great opportunity to use the document camera to display student work.
