In maths, it can be very frustrating when pupils get the answer wrong when we know that they understand how to carry out a particular calculation. This can often be due to a careless error that a pupil has overlooked since they are not asking themselves, ‘Is this answer reasonable?’ For this reason, it is useful to look at questions and answers and ask pupils to explain why particular answers cannot be correct, without carrying out the actual calculation. That is the focus of this PowerPoint pre

When working on calculations, pupils need to work efficiently and confidently. This PowerPoint focuses on working efficiently. Using standard algorithms isn’t always the most efficient way to calculate an answer. It is better for pupils to use number sense when deciding on the most efficient way to perform a calculation. Allowing pupils to discuss their methods reminds pupils about the most efficient ways to calculate different questions. Although pupils don’t always need to use formal algorit

Teaching style

Lessons have to be engaging and fun within a classroom environment which celebrates mistakes (because then I can see what they and others are thinking!) and encourages pupils to make conjectures and pursue these. It is also vitally important that teachers learn something from every lesson about pupils' learning, misconceptions or difficulties so that we can reflect and make pupils' experiences richer and increase both their understanding and enjoyment of mathematics.
