There are many ways to use these images. In my third grade class, I ask students to make a t-chart in their Math Journals. On one side, they write “Notice” and on the other, they write “Wonder”. Students spend five minutes observing the displayed image. They record their observations under the “Notice” column of their journals. Any questions they have are recorded on the “Wonder” side.
After about five minutes, we discuss students’ observations, as I record them on the slide for the class
This letter describes what nonsense words are and why and how we use them to monitor reading progress. This letter is a great resource for the classroom or reading teacher teacher to give to parents!
This editable letter is given to parents after mid-year DIBELS results have been collected. The letter helps parents understand the DIBELS subtests (NWF, ORF) and lets them know how their child did on the midyear Benchmark test.
Early in the year, when introducing Reading Workshop, students are taught how to find "good fit" books using the acronym, IPICK (I choose my book, Purpose, Interest, Comprehend, Know most of the words). This letter explains the importance of students finding "good fit" books and gives parents easy-to-follow instructions on how to guide their children in finding good fit books. This editable letter is addressed to "First Grade Families", but can be changed to fit any grade. Enjoy!

Each year, I ask parents to donate small items to go in our class store. Students are given “wallets” (some years I have requested change purses from a local bank – other years, we have simply used small, sealable envelopes that the students decorate). Students earn coins for positive behaviors and excellent work. Each Wednesday, students come to my “bank” and can exchange coins for larger coins, or paper money. On Fridays,
This makes for a great Daily Five activity! Students are given several CVC words-both real and nonsense. They are given one minute (timer included in flipchart) to move the words to the proper category. Words can be changed as needed.
Toward the end of the school year, we start "Student Secret Readers". Secret Readers gives builds students' reading confidence. Growth Mindset Scoot is an engaging and fun game that can be used to reinforce your Growth Mindset lessons. The teacher puts cards on desks around the room. Students move from one card to another, read the cards, and circle whether the statement is a "fixed" or "growth mindset" statement. You can use students' answer sheets to assess their understanding of Growth Mindset! Enjoy! For more of my products, visit my TpT store: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mazzymom
Since my District has started a “no treats” policy, I distribute this letter at the beginning of the year. The letter encourages parents to send in a book in honor of their child’s birthday, rather than edible goodies. Enjoy!
I ask parents to complete this at "Sneak a Peak", when I students and their families for the first time. It is very helpful to have detailed student information available to me on the first day of school, particularly the information pertaining to transportation and food allergies. Once they have all been returned, I place them in a "Student Information and Parent Contact" binder.
I hand these out, stapled to a white lunch bag, at "Sneak a Peak". Students bring the bags to school on the first day to share what they did over the summer. Great ice breaker!
