About the store
I started out teaching alternative special education to 6th graders in 1997. In 1998, I wanted to teach science because it is my passion and moved to an alternative high school where I taught all sciences from grades 9-12 to people ages 16-22. When funding was no longer available and our school was shut down 6 years later, I moved to a junior high school in the area. Many of my former students said their hate for school started there and I wanted to be able to help them along instead of seeing them drop out...that was 8 years ago. I still work with at-risk students trying to help them value and desire an education and imparting them with knowledge that will help them become life long learners.
I have training in many different areas and serve as a new teacher mentor, state assessor, and still to this day take classes to help me better my professional life.

What is a watershed? Hands on activity
I took this actual activity from 3 different sources. One was set for a demonstration, two were set for kids to do - one had one step and one had 2 steps.
To extend what was there, I took what was just the activity and changed into a hands on with questions and a map added to it and put it in student friendly written instructions instead of verbal instructions.

Human Skeleton Diagram to Label (middle school)
This is a picture of the human skeleton I had years back that I took and photo shopped for students to be able to label in a quiz.
I did not draw the skeleton, but did get rid of the words and put new arrows and lines in to allow students to label the bones.
It came in very handy and I used it all of my middle school teaching years after.
It may be a little too elementary for high schoolers, but could be a good review for them on the basics.

Skeletal System Powerpoint
This power point is used with 7th graders as notes for the major points of the skeletal system. I do an anticipation guide as a pre-test and self post assessment, a bone lab that allows them to see parts of the bone (spongy bone, periosteum, compact bone, marrow, muscle attachment, ect) with a chicken wing, and follow it up with my unit culmination (a jigsaw on body systems that the students make and present to their peers). Penny Probability for Genetics
This is a old school activity that I typed up to fit the needs of my students. It is short and to the point and very easy to help students understand. Students flip pennies to study the concept.
Materials are 2 pennies per groups and worksheet. It is very cost effective as well. It could also be used in mathematics as well to show how probability works.

IS IT ALIVE? Characteristics of life lab
This is an introductory inquiry lab where students learn about the characteristics of life. They get a mystery substance and have to use their experiences and observations to deduce if the mystery substance is alive.
I used it with seventh graders and it is geared toward upper elementary and middle school students.
There are pre-lab and post-lab questions along with the experiment itself.

Uncovering the Past Introductory Powerpoint for History
THis is the powerpoint I made from my textbook so that i could present it to my students. I animated it as well. It has the ppt i made, a set of student sheets with fill in the blanks, and the answers to the questions at the end.

Famous Scientist Research Worksheet
This was created when I started teaching middle school to introduce them to the library. 25 point Science Journal Rubric
The file is a 25 point Science journal scoring rubric. I developed this year so i can assess just the science component of my journals. My students do not get to write short items in their ELA classes, only essays it seems, so in collaboration with the ELA block teachers on my TEAM, we have devised a way to make my journals cross curricular allowing them to assess the ELA component. Reciprocal Teaching Activity for Notes
This is a short reciprocal teaching activity I use when my students have a few sections of notes. I use it because it aids in increasing their reading comprehension and reading for a purpose. Our school has low test scores on those two areas, so I figure that I can work on my content and have them complete this while I do. The title of the Notes will need to be changed however to meet your need!
It can really be used in any subject area at any grade and is a great short activity for partners!

Complete Microscope Lab with guided learning log and scoring sheet

ELA Journal Rubric (25 point journals)
This is a rubric I created for my TEAM to use when assessing ELA journals. The Social Studies and Science teachers pass on their journals to the ELA teachers to assess student writing samples. This team effort is really effective is having the kids pay more attention to their writing at all times and in all content areas. It is designed to be a quick check for a short jounral, not an essay!

Reptile Essay Guidelines - Middle School
When I taught middle school, my students were required to complete a portfolio on reptiles. One required component of this portfolio was an essay. This is the essay guidelines and what was required along with websites to allow them to look for the info. Students went to the library at least monthly for content area research so I made sure they had something meaningful to do that would increase their knowledge of the content at hand.

Skeletal and Muscular System Anticipation Guide
I use this as a pre and post assessment for my students for the lesson on the bones and muscles. I like to do this in class with them first and send it home as homework at the end of a culminating activity to allow students to assess themselves after we have completed the lessons. I use it to see where students are before we begin one so I can make adjustments to my lesson.

Waves RAFT
This activity was used with a 6th grade Physical Science class but could easily be adapted to a higher or lower grade level. It could also work out as a research project with an ELA class.
The rubric with it is based on the ELA rubric used for state testing (the PARCC is not in place yet here). Content is weighted more heavily since I am a core content teacher.

I like my classroom to be a safe place where students can succeed and express themselves as they take home positive learning experiences. I am not a dictator in my class. I like to facilitate and let the children learn by doing.

My own education history
I received my BS in education from Nicholls State University in 1997. I have a concentration in Biology with my minor being General Science. I have since taken many many graduate classes for "fun" as well as to increase acheivement with my students.
Additional biographical information
I am finally going back to complete my masters degree. I have enough hours to have my plus 30 plus some, but nothing that goes together for a degree. I apparently just like going to school!
