About the store
I started out teaching alternative special education to 6th graders in 1997. In 1998, I wanted to teach science because it is my passion and moved to an alternative high school where I taught all sciences from grades 9-12 to people ages 16-22. When funding was no longer available and our school was shut down 6 years later, I moved to a junior high school in the area. Many of my former students said their hate for school started there and I wanted to be able to help them along instead of seeing them drop out...that was 8 years ago. I still work with at-risk students trying to help them value and desire an education and imparting them with knowledge that will help them become life long learners.
I have training in many different areas and serve as a new teacher mentor, state assessor, and still to this day take classes to help me better my professional life.

What is a watershed? Hands on activity
I took this actual activity from 3 different sources. One was set for a demonstration, two were set for kids to do - one had one step and one had 2 steps.
To extend what was there, I took what was just the activity and changed into a hands on with questions and a map added to it and put it in student friendly written instructions instead of verbal instructions.

Human Skeleton Diagram to Label (middle school)
This is a picture of the human skeleton I had years back that I took and photo shopped for students to be able to label in a quiz.
I did not draw the skeleton, but did get rid of the words and put new arrows and lines in to allow students to label the bones.
It came in very handy and I used it all of my middle school teaching years after.
It may be a little too elementary for high schoolers, but could be a good review for them on the basics.

IS IT ALIVE? Characteristics of life lab
This is an introductory inquiry lab where students learn about the characteristics of life. They get a mystery substance and have to use their experiences and observations to deduce if the mystery substance is alive.
I used it with seventh graders and it is geared toward upper elementary and middle school students.
There are pre-lab and post-lab questions along with the experiment itself.

Famous Scientist Research Worksheet
This was created when I started teaching middle school to introduce them to the library. Each core teacher took their kids to the library once a month and had to create an information resources lesson for their kids. This is a very short and concise sheet on a famous scientist. Skeletal and Muscular System Anticipation Guide
I use this as a pre and post assessment for my students for the lesson on the bones and muscles. I like to do this in class with them first and send it home as homework at the end of a culminating activity to allow students to assess themselves after we have completed the lessons. I use it to see where students are before we begin one so I can make adjustments to my lesson.

Using Fruit to Teach Math Measurement Lab
This was designed to teach my students measurement and utilize the math skills they had to apply it to real life situations. They used fruit because it is not always perfectly shaped and and they have to do some problem solving as they work through the questions.

Positive Affirmation Color Sheets - Great for rewards for good work!
This document contains 6 sheets of color pages that are really great for students due to the positive affirmations that they get when they color it. These could be great for students to have to reinforce their great work or even just for something fun to do or for little reward parties.

This is an anticipation guide to help my students assess their own learning.

Famous Scientist Research Sheet
When introducing my students to researching, I like to use this sheet to have them learn about a scientist. I take a list of scientists and cut it up then have them pick out of a cup. I do this to assure that everyone does something different and someone besides Einstein. I try to pick people that they have not heard of or people who have done things they would really be interested in. The kids love doing this assignment.

Safety Rule Journal
I use this journal in class to get my student's perspective on which safety rules seem to stick out more than others. When I have them share in a think-pair-share group, some really good discussions seem to begin. When we discuss what we learned, things are pointed out sometimes that I did not even realize they caught on to.

Biomes Closure Activity
This is a closure activity I made for my Biomes lesson.
To make it look like I wanted, I made it in powerpoint. It has 2 slides - one that is the student sheet and one that explains the directions. There is no answer key because each student will have different answers. This was the closure after they created billboards for the biomes they researched.

Digestion Project
This is the digestion project my kids work on as we go through the sections in class. I usually give them 3 - 5 days to complete this and it is done at home or during early finisher time. The last part of the assignment may need to be changed to fit your particular text and it can also be adjusted to suit grade levels higher than grade 7.

Body Systens Reciprocal Teaching Activity
This is a short activity I developed based on what the required curriculum calls for the students to do. I personally prefer teaching each body system, but my district makes me follow the state "suggested" activities to the letter so I try to create sheets I feel will aid the students in completing assignments.

It is geared toward special education students in 7th grade, but can easily be adapted for any grade level.

Species Interactions and Feeding Relationships Activity
This is an authentic assessment and DI activity that allows students to make creations to show the concepts we covered in class. They address the relationships of predation, mutualism, commensalism, parasitism, and competition.
It is a simple activity that I start and allow them to work on for half of the class period to create rough drafts and then take home to finish.

I like my classroom to be a safe place where students can succeed and express themselves as they take home positive learning experiences. I am not a dictator in my class. I like to facilitate and let the children learn by doing.

My own education history
I received my BS in education from Nicholls State University in 1997. I have a concentration in Biology with my minor being General Science. I have since taken many many graduate classes for "fun" as well as to increase acheivement with my students.
Additional biographical information
I am finally going back to complete my masters degree. I have enough hours to have my plus 30 plus some, but nothing that goes together for a degree. I apparently just like going to school!
