This resource is to be used before students read The Whale Rider. There is a student handout that each student contemplates the statements and notes whether they agree or disagree (and rate how strongly). They are asked to make note of why they feel the way they do. There is also a teacher copy for the projector where the class results can be visually recorded. Students find examples of figurative language in the novel and then analyze significant quotations.
I use this resource to check students understanding of the introduction (pages 1-10) of the novella, Of Mice and Men. This can be used in regular English classes as well as with ESL/ELL students to focus their attention the contrasting descriptions of George and Lennie at the beginning of the book. We talk about direct characterization and methods of indirect characterization beforehand. I do not reveal that Lennie is mentally challenged.
