Educators know there are student factors outside of school, such as home life and childhood experiences, that have a big influence on student success in school. New research has shown that one factor in particular—academic vocabulary—is one of the strongest indicators of how well students will learn subject area content when they come to school. http://www.ascd.org/ASCD/media/siteASCD/common/six_step_flash.html Robert J. Marzano is an American speaker, trainer, and educational researcher. He

Why not use reciprocal teaching in Mathematics? Here's how.... I use this thinkboard when asking students to answer questions or problems. Not sure what Reciprocal Teaching is... Reciprocal teaching is a cooperative learning instructional method in which natural dialogue models and reveals learners' thinking processes about a shared learning experience. Teachers foster reciprocal teaching through their belief that collaborative construction of meaning between themselves and students leads to

This activity has been adapted from Malcolm Swan's research. Enabling learners to: * confront and overcome common misconceptions about probability; * count equally likely outcomes, using diagrams; * discuss relationships between theoretical probabilities, observed outcomes and sample sizes; * calculate probabilities of dependent and independent events. Print off the pdf, cut up the squares and have students match the cards accordingly to demonstrate their understanding of probability.

This thinkboard is a way to organise students' work in place value with three digit numbers. It allows them to show how to solve a given word problem using manipulatives, pictures, and written number sentences. This thinkboard is broken up into four parts; 'less and more', 'making a model', 'renaming' and writing the number in words'. I have also uploaded a thinkboard relating to decimals.

This activity has been adapted from Malcolm Swan's research. Enabling learners to: * name and classify polygons according to their properties; * develop mathematical language to describe the similarities and differences between shapes; * develop convincing explanations as to why combinations of particular properties are impossible. Print off the pdf, cut up the squares and have students match the cards accordingly to demonstrate their understanding of two dimensional shape.

Every student should have a Mathematics Vocabulary Journal! Step Two or Robert Marzano's approach to Building Academic Vocabulary suggests that students record their word and understanding of the word in the journal or notebook. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y6annoSZyU http://www.ascd.org/ASCD/media/siteASCD/common/six_step_flash.html This 95 page journal supports Marzano's process. There are contents pages that group clusters of letters within the alphabet and a series of index pages that allow

This reference guide for students supports four types of questions; right there, think and search, author and me & on my own. This product is one page. I laminate a page for each of my students and they refer to this when reading, participating in literacy circles groups or book clubs. It has really helped to guide their questions.

Anecdotal notes are used to record specific observations of individual student behaviours, skills and attitudes as they relate to the outcomes in the program of studies. Such notes provide cumulative information on student learning and direction for further instruction. Anecdotal notes are often written as the result of ongoing observations during the lessons but may also be written in response to a product or performance the student has completed. They are brief, objective and focused on specif

Reading strategies are purposeful, cognitive actions that students take when they are reading to help them construct and maintain meaning. This reference guide does not include every strategy that ever existed but does include the strategies I focus on when working with my students. Students in my class each have one of these sheets to refer to when they are reading and it has brought about greater competency and confidence.

George Booker articulates the developmental sequence for teaching 'Time' in his book 'Teaching Primary Mathematics'. From exploring everyday events, reading clock times, calculating elapsed time and everything in between he unpacks what is necessary for our students to understand this concept. In this PDF I have created ten assessments that match Booker's sequence for learning. These assessments can be used for both formative and summative purposes and allow educators to place their students on

Additional biographical information

Over many years I have undertaken several of the state's leadership development programs. These programs have been pivotal in developing my leadership capacity. I have learnt a great deal about school leadership through these programs, undertaken significant professional reading and have been given the opportunity to work with some outstanding mentors and coaches. I firmly believe that best results come about by working in teams. Working as part of a team can be a valuable experience for all members. When people work together to plan, evaluate and solve problems they are able to share ideas and learn from each other while utilising each other’s strengths. I enjoy the challenge of new responsibilities and aspire to continue and improve my own learning whilst promoting the skills and talents of those I work with.
