MASTER SCHEDULE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION

I created this Excel spreadsheet to be a visual for our Master Schedule. We are a very inclusive school, offering the full spectrum of services as required by law. We give students the support they require in their least restrictive environment in our building, utilizing all staff available. In the Excel spreadsheet you will notice Teachers, Instructional Assistants and Special Teaching Program Assistants being utilized throughout the building with general education, and special education

Progress Report - Gen Ed Teachers

This is a helpful tool that can be used for any grade level student who spends time in a General Education classroom with or without support. Teachers can fill this out as frequently as you need them to. As a special ed teacher in 4th/5th grade, I like it once a trimester. It's quick checklist, so it doesn't take the general ed teacher a long time to fill out, but it helps guide progress on the student keeping up in class. Inclusion is great, depending on the success of the communication between

This is a great way to combine friendly letter writing and social skills. The advice column cards are situation cards, and the students write a letter back (similar to "Dear Abby") to the letter writer. In their letter they need to help the person solve their problem. Some are school related and some are more social or home related.

I LOVE THIS POWERPOINT!! I created it from a Marilyn Burns activity in one of her books, but the Powerpoint is all my creation. Students LOVE this activity, where they are told a story about a couple opening a restaurant, and attempting to open their restaurant for banquet style seating, but are not sure how many people they can seat. This is a great introduction to Algebra. Our fifth graders don't even realize they are doing algebra until the slide show tells them they are!

This chart is helpful for students when they are trying to "stump the teacher" or their own classmates. When they are reading fiction or non-fiction, if they use one question word from one side and one question word from the top, wherever they land on the matrix is how difficult the question is (based on Bloom's Taxonomy). The more down and to the right, the more complex the question and the more up and to the left, the more basic the question. Great for differentiating instruction or expectatio

Non Fiction Elements Quiz - sunburst

This is a quick way to quiz students on their application and understanding of non-fiction elements. Each section of the sunburst focuses on one element of non-fiction (glossary, bold faced words, index, etc.). Based on the students' reading of non-fiction, they have to pull out examples of each element. Teachers have given this to students to fill in with a general piece of non-fiction, like a Scholastic News, or they can base it on their chosen topic. Easy to see, easy to use, easy to do, easy

IEP Quick Info chart for staff

I have used this chart at the beginning of the year. It is easily filled in by me, the special education teacher, and distributed to all relevant staff members (general education teachers, specialists, and administration). It allows the staff to get basic information about each student in a grade level, who has an IEP on one piece of paper. For example, my Librarian likes getting this information because if a 5th grade student is reading at a first grade level, she will have to accommodate for t

About the store

Experience

I have taught Special Education for 17 years - everything from self contained to co-teaching in inclusive environments. I love it!

Teaching style

I co-teach in fourth and fifth grades. My style is to encourage those who think they can't, to believe that they indeed CAN. I go with the flow in other teachers' classrooms, following their policies and procedures to the point that they are my own, and students see me as another teacher they have, not just someone who comes into their room for a part of their day. I do owe this, however, to the awesome co-teaching partners I have!

Awards & shining teacher moments

I recently renewed my National Board Certification under Exceptional Children, ages 0-21.

My own education history

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey.

Additional biographical information

I was born in Pittsburgh, moved to New Jersey in third grade and attended Glassboro State College for undergraduate studies in communications. I worked in PR/Marketing for 5 years prior to going back for my master's degree in Special Education. I was married in 1999, and our daughter was born in 2003. I've been teaching for 17 years and can't see myself doing anything else that gives me the satisfaction that teaching does... or the time off to be with my daughter in the summer!
