In an effort to prepare my grade 8 students for independent work in high school, I have introduced the Independent Genre Study Project. The 90-Second Film Project was born out of a need to engage students in their book clubs, provide an opportunity to "play" within assessment, and have learning displayed for an authentic audience. A grade 7 mini-project (1 hour) that has students use their skills in rate and percent to choose which way to buy 1000 t-shirts. Students will work out the price of buying shirts in Ontario (with sales tax, gas, and food) vs. Pennsylvania (no tax, but with exchange rate). It's a fun assessment as learning!
