PSAT 8/9 Mini Practice Test (40 questions--10 questions per section)

Created by
ModernMiddle
Prepare your 8th and 9th grade students for success with this PSAT 8/9 Practice Test. It is thoughtfully designed to build foundational skills and familiarize learners with the test format. This practice test includes 40 questions spread across the four major PSAT 8/9 sections/modules, with 10 questions in each section. The reading section covers comprehension and analysis. The writing & language section covers grammar, usage, and editing skills appropriate for the 8/9 age group. The math (no

Fake and Unreliable Websites Activity -- Great for Intro to Research Unit!

Created by

I use this activity with my eighth grade students as we are about to begin our research unit. My students know the basics about what websites are trustworthy (I.e.--we don't use Wikipedia as a source, we look at dates for relevance, we verify the content we read, etc.). That being said, in an internet-heavy age, it can still be tough to sort through reliable and unreliable websites! This activity asks students to visit 4 websites, 3 of which are filled with phony information! Students need to jo

PSAT or SAT Style Grammar Assignment -- Works as a Review or an Assessment!

I have my students complete this before the 8/9 PSAT in the spring each year. I actually make a bit of a game out of it! I have students work in pairs and come show me their answers when they're done, and I'll tell them how many questions they have answered correctly, but not WHICH questions. I have them keep trying and re-thinking until they reach 100%. That being said, you could also use this as a grammar assessment instead! Either way, I highly suggest editing the names of the teachers in t

This "Wanted"-style Classroom jobs slideshow contains 6 job descriptions (Chromebook Captain, Materials Manager, Time Titan, Board Boss, Grown-Up Greeter, and Attendance Aide). I have also included a job "application" with the listing (linked on the last slide). The slideshow and doc application are editable/customizable, so if you'd prefer to add or edit job titles, you're free to do so! I use these in my middle school classroom, but I can easily see them working out in an upper elementary clas

The Outsiders Chapter 8 Assignment (Questions and Fun Drawing!)

Created by
ModernMiddle
I use this assignment with my students as we read The Outsiders. We read most chapters together, either as a read-aloud or in a readers-theater type of style. A few chapters, however, I ask students to read independently or with a partner. On those days, I like to give them an assignment to ensure they are, in fact, completing the reading, but to also ensure they are comprehending what they're reading.

"Flowers for Algernon" Fun Grammar Review Assignment!

I use this assignment with my eighth graders while we read "Flowers for Algernon." I pass out the maze and simply ask them to complete it by getting the mouse to the cheese in the center (there are a few different ways to do so). There is, however, a catch! The other side of the document reveals that whenever students cross a colored dot, they must complete the corresponding task. We review grammar concepts as we read, so the tasks are related to parts of speech, homophones, comma usage, etc. Th

Ethos, Pathos, Logos Online Sorting Activity!

Created by

I use this activity with my seventh and eighth grade students to review ethos, pathos, and logos in advertising. They enjoy this activity--both the content and the format of a tech drag-and-drop. The background is a template, which is helpful, as students are only able to drag the actual drag-and-drop elements--not any objects in the background that could make this technologically difficult or messy. This activity is three slides, accompanied by a three-slide answer key. (6 pages total) You can

"Why I Deserve an A" Persuasive Writing Assignment (GREAT for a sub day plan!)

I use this as a persuasive writing project with my eighth graders! It can last 1-2 days, depending on if you have other routines you complete in class each day or what your school schedule may look like. This is also a GREAT activity for a sub day or a day when you yourself need to get some work/grading done at your desk! Students will have a slideshow that includes directions, an example assignment, and a template for their own work. Their job is to convince you (their teacher) that they deser

Color-By-Number: Irrational, Rational, Integer, Whole, and Natural Numbers

Created by
ModernMiddle
This color-by-number activity asks students to color in an image based on whether the numbers are irrational, rational, integer, whole, or natural numbers. A helpful circle diagram is provided, as is an answer key. *Because some numbers overlap (for example, the number 1 could be an integer, a whole number, and a natural number), students are asked to choose the most specific type of number--meaning that in this case the number 1 would be classified as a natural number.

Fun Context Clues Assignment!

My seventh and eighth graders genuinely enjoy this assignment! I often remind them that they are capable of figuring out a word's meaning with context clues, even if they have absolutely NO clue what the word means. To prove my point, I created this assignment. Most of the words they need to make meaning of are real words...but five of them aren't! Kids use context clues to determine the definitions of different words--yes, even if not all of those words are real! They love to guess which words

House Floorplan Layout ("Sims In Real Life!" Blueprint Activity)

I like to give fun activities like this to students who finish tests or quizzes early! They had a lot of fun with this one, mapping out their dream houses and floorplans. I could see how this could be converted into an assignment for certain classes as well (ex: "Move the walls of the house to increase the number of available rooms," or "If each room housed a character from our novel, how might each space be decorated?"

This packet is 3 pages (6 total including the answer key) of exercises to help students practice growing comfortable with latitude and longitude. The first page has students plotting coordinates and answering questions, the second has students filling in blanks through a matching exercise, and the third has students tracing a mouse's path to obtain a hunk of cheese. Depending on your group of students, I could see this utilized in a 5th, 6th, or 7th grade classroom. This file is an editable Goo

60s Background Information Museum Assignment (Perfect for The Outsiders!)

I use this assignment each year prior to reading The Outsiders with my 8th graders in order to build background knowledge. Students get into pairs and are each assigned one of the 60s topics from the slides (fashion, slang, teen life, music, cars, famous faces, and world or national events). Students then have time (I typically give them two class periods) to find images and write descriptions to fill out their virtual museum slides. Then, partnerships present to the class. "Flowers for Algernon" Short Story Assessment (Comprehension and Grammar)

Created by

This assessment is given to eighth-graders as a part of our "Flowers for Algernon" unit. We spend a few days reading the short story in class, and we discuss themes, textual evidence, inference, and more. Due to the nature of the story and how it's written, we also include some grammar-related questions on the assessment. You could also use this as a review for your own test/assessment or as a review activity (for students to complete individually or with partners) UPON finishing the short story

Students will sort sentences by looking for similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, and hyperbole. The last slide asks students to find their own examples--book examples can be found be students looking in books within your classroom, or they may search on line if you have

I use this with my eighth-grade students, but they find a number of the questions challenging! This is also customizable/able to be edited, so you could easily raise or lower the difficulty level by subbing in some of your own questions. I give students a designated amount of time to complete the worksheet by answering which word correctly fits in the blank space for each question. The catch? They are a

Students should take the editorial notes into account to rewrite each section of the story.
