Have students explore decomposing and rearranging figures in order to reason about area. This lesson includes a written lesson plan, a presentation to guide you through the lesson, a google site link with resources for students to explore and use to check their knowledge, and a math task to apply their learning. The task is about finding the area of a garden to figure out how much mulch is needed to cover the entire area.
This activity includes practice problems for area of parallelograms, triangles, and composite figures. I am using it with my 6th grade class to support the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum. Slides are set up with Pear Deck (Chrome extension).
