Similar Triangles and Proportions Project

Created by
Mr Steffes
This is a cooperative learning activity (groups of 2) for using similar triangles and proportions to find the height of an object. Students fill in the blanks to the story problem (like Mad Libs), sketch the triangles with labels, and then write and solve a proportion. Then students can make and present a poster of their problem.

Polynomial Function Modeling

Created by
Mr Steffes
This is a graphic organizer to be used as notes for modeling polynomial functions from data in a precalculus course. Graphs are shown for linear, quadratic, cubic, and quartic functions, examples are given for choosing which type of function to use from a scatter plot, then calculator instructions are given (TI-83/84) for finding regression equations. Answer key not included.

Mr Steffes
This is a worksheet for students to create their own word problem (filling in the blanks like Mad Libs) to write a composition of functions in two ways to compare prices of a product they are going to buy. This shows the difference between f(g(x)) and g(f(x)) in terms of real-world problems. This can be done in groups or individually and can be presented.
Preview of Trigonometric Ratios Project

Trigonometric Ratios Project

Created by
Mr Steffes
This is a project for a geometry/trigonometry class in which students create their own word problems which require solving equations using the tangent, sine and cosine ratios. They must provide the angle and one side length. Additionally, they must write a problem that uses an inverse to find the missing angle. Examples are not provided but are necessary for student success. The sheet is designed to be double-sided and cut in half. A scoring rubric is included on the back side.

This is a bundle of my worksheets "Perpendicular Lines", "Triangles", and "Polygon Angle Sums" that are designed to be used with my music videos on YouTube from my channel "MrSteffesSongs". These are aligned to Common Core Standards in High School Geometry.
Preview of Scientific Notation Project

Scientific Notation Project

Created by
Mr Steffes
This is an activity for an 8th grade math class to practice writing numbers in scientific notation and comparing numbers in scientific notation using data from a McDonald's food menu (updated nutrition facts found on McDonalds.com). The students then write a story about their trip to McDonald's, who ate what, and how the meals compared.

Systems of Equations Project

Created by
Mr Steffes
This is a project for an algebra or algebra 2 class for solving systems of linear equations. It is designed for groups of 2, one student being the "writer" and the other being the "speaker". The writer is the only one who can write things and the speaker is the only one who can ask questions for the group and who presents for the group. They must create their own systems of equations word problem, using examples as a guide (not provided) and solve it using graphing, substitution, and elimination

This is a cooperative learning activity for groups of two to create and solve their own systems of equations word problem based on the theme of going on a trip. Variables would be the cost of the trip and the number of nights or days. Teacher's initials are required after the first step to make sure the problem is reasonable (make sure the lower flight cost has a higher cost per night). Students then compare costs using a table and by writing and solving equations. Finally, they need to make a p

Responsibility Self-Reflection

This is a bellringer/warm up activity for students to self-reflect on 7 classroom habits, such as completing work, paying attention, and studying. Students choose between "poor", "could be better", or "great". This language, in my experience, provides reasonably honest answers from students. I recommend assigning this regularly (after each week, unit, or quarter) to discover any student growth. The sheet is designed to be cut into thirds. If you want this to have greater impact, please consider

Pythagorean Theorem Project

Created by
Mr Steffes
This is a cooperative learning activity for groups of two to create and solve their own word problem to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find a missing length. It should be given after students are familiar with Pythagorean Theorem word problems and after examples are provided. The teacher's initials are needed before moving to the next step to make sure the problem is reasonable. The last two steps require construction of a poster and presentation of the poster. The sheet is to be double-sided an
