How to read a food label. This reading challenge allows students to practice reading a food label before answering 10 questions challenging them to show their understanding. This is a great reading/research/inquiry activity and gets students into the habit of being able to read food labels to understand what they are actually eating. I used this as part of a unit on Food and Sustainability and also for a Balanced Living unit.

A comprehensive informational text all about Tet - Vietnamese New Year. This reading comes with comprehension questions to check for understanding and allows students to make personal connections to the reading.

A great resource to get the children thinking! This allows them to share their perspective on World Cup mascots before solving some challenging mascot maths using algebraic thinking. A template at the end allows them to give their own values for the chosen mascots before they can share them with classmates to solve. My students absolutely loved this challenge!

This is a good example of a simple information report about the telephone. The reading comes with a list of comprehension questions. This was used to serve as an example before students wrote their own information reports about technology that interested them, e.g. cars, games consoles, televisions - even washing machines and jet planes. The students followed the same layout with a brief intro with a hook then 4 main paragraphs answering: What is it? How it changed? What has been its impact?

Fun and simple guess the animal quiz - perfect as a starter to a lesson on anything animal related. Also good for simple reading practice and writing descriptions/creating clues. This can then be connected to a lesson on simple paragraph writing describing an animal, or going further - an information report.

An engaging maths challenge that allows students to learn about whales while practicing maths skills such a data handling, using number, subtraction, and estimation. There is also the opportunity for them to share their own perspective and research further about these hugely impressive creatures.

This lesson/activity allows students to practise using adverbs in creative writing/descriptive writing.
