A short lab activity for astronomy or earth space science. Students make a double line graph of the number of sunspots and the number of crashed satellites in a given year. Then they look for patterns and write a science conclusion utilizing claim, evidence, reasoning scaffolding framework.
Grading rubric and sample student responses are included
This lab activity blends well into a unit on electromagnetic waves, planetary mechanics, or the Sun's influence on Earth.
NGSS aligned video lesson and activity handout for getting students to map volcanoes and earthquakes using latitudes and longitudes. Have students determine which places are earthquake risky and earthquake safe. Develop the evidence for plate tectonics. Includes video links to YouTube videos, student hand out and answer key. **HS-ESS1-5.** Evaluate evidence of the past and current movements of continental and oceanic crust and the theory of plate tectonics to explain the ages of crustal rocks. *
An assignment for students to complete as they watch "Earth: Making of a Planet" movie documentary.
The video takes students through topics such as formation of the solar system, formation of the earth and moon, differentiation of the Earth, formation of oceans and atmosphere, great oxygenation event, emergence of life, first bacteria, supercontinents, plate tectonics, mass extinction events, appearance and disappearance of mamals, emergence of humans, and climate change.

Kinetic and Potential energy worksheet with answer key. This practice assignment allows the students to apply the idea of conservation of energy means, using the mathematics that the total change of energy in any system is always equal to the total energy transferred into or out of the system.
Answer key is included.
HS-PS3-1. Create a computational model to calculate the change in the energy of one component in a system when the change in energy of the other component(s) and energy flows in a
Do your students struggle with radiometric or Carbon dating?
This activity is an engaging way to introduce the concept of dating to your students. It relies on a concept they already understand - popcorn popping in the microwave.
Included in this package:
- Student handout
- Beautiful Task Cards
- Teacher Answer Key
Challenge your students to develop a model of formation of our solar system and planets using sets of cards displaying stages and processes of formation.
A highly engaging activity for students to make sense of vocabulary used in the formation of the solar system
Once students create the model, they will use their model to answer questions about our solar system.

Beautiful 2 page graphic organizer on seismic or earthquake waves
Compares:
Surface vs Body Waves
Primary Waves
Secondary Waves
Love Waves
Rayleigh Waves
Provides easy to label diagrams for each wave type
The second page allows students to label the diagram using the seismic wave vocabulary.
This is great graph interpretation skill practice.
Can be used in conjunction with any textbook that covers earthquakes.
Model using mathematics the incoming and outgoing energy of our planet.
Students complete a diagram using the accompanying modeling cards. Solve for missing information algebraically. Then use their finished model to answer comprehension and application questions.
Answer key included.
Assessment of student knowledge and skills that tests the following concepts:
1) Seismic Waves
2) Seismograms
3) P-waves vs S-waves
4) Epicenter
5) Richter Scale
6) Mercalli Magnitude
7) Locating the earthquake epicenter

development of technologies to mitigate their effects
MS-ESS2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed
A multiple choice 10 minute quiz to assess student understanding of wave interference. Problems present examples of both constructive and destructive interference.
10 problems.

Assessment task used to measure students ability to come up with a claim then support it with evidence and reasoning.
This task gives students data, and they use the data to come up with their claim, give evidence and reasoning. In addition students come up with evidence and reasoning against a given claim.

This is a rubric that I have used for 4 years now with my high school students in conjunction with organized binder system.
It's a rubric that evaluates the organization of their binder on a 1-5 point scale.
Rubric can be used in two ways. As a standard rubric that the teacher uses to evaluate the binders. Or, my favorite way, students trade binders and peer-check them. The rubrics are then collected and participation scores are entered.

A virtual lab handout and guide to accompany Star in a Box simulation http://starinabox.lcogt.net/
Allows students to develop an understanding of stellar evolution as seen on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.
Using Star in a Box web-based simulation kids can alter the mass of the star and watch the evolutionary stages happen. They can collect data on luminosity, temperature, radius, lifetime.
This project is a great way for students to finish their study of plate tectonics. In this project, students research, develop and deliver a Google Slides presentation on one of case study disasters. Students then listen to all the presentations and learn from one another.
