Students will critically analyze a cell phone text messaging plan from a fictitious company to determine various costs of using UR Phone BFF as a wireless carrier. Students read an ad, write an expression, create a table, populate a coordinate graph, and answer 10 comprehension questions to demonstrate proficiency in many 6th grade algebra standards.

I used this project for 3 years as an end-of-unit assessment on working with fractions when I taught 6th grade mathematics. The project has 2 parts: the poster and an essay. This review puzzle provides an opportunity for students to practice basic percentage-based problems in a self checking format. Students then create their own puzzle with an optional extension activity of trading with a peer for additional practice and feedback opportunities. Primarily intended as a paper/pencil resource, this could also be completed digitally.

A student I taught in 2012 who really struggled with math got an A on a recent test in 7th grade. She immediately stated that she could not wait to come see me and tell me because I "would be so proud". This was before she asked her current teacher to call her mom and brag on her A.
