Have you ever had a moment when you didn’t know someone’s name but you were too embarrassed to ask? That happens to students too! Sometimes they can go through an entire class without knowing the names of their peers. I believe it is important for the entire class to get to know one another’s names; I feel it helps them to interact more comfortably when working on class activities and assessments. This is a fast, fun, and easy activity that will get students smiling and using each other’s name.

Students are really cool people! Get to know them better by using this questionnaire. I created this resource to use in my own classes because I believe that creating relationships is key to ensuring a positive learning environment. I like to hand this out the first week of school when I have an extra 10-15 minutes in class. I don’t always have time to read them right away, but I do hold on to them for the semester. Sometimes when I am having discipline issues with a student or want to help a

Pica, Libel, Beat… Wouldn’t teaching Journalism class be easier if everyone could use and understand standardized subject specific vocabulary? Many of today’s students are unfamiliar with even the most basic journalism jargon, but getting everyone on the same page can be easy with the versatile vocabulary pack. I created the journalism vocabulary word list to help ensure everyone on my newspaper staff was using the same words to plan, work as a team, and provide feedback. It turned out to be a

Every student wants to take a class with a buddy! This is a fun back to school mini unit that builds classroom community and helps the class get to know each other. It pairs each student up with a peer, or English buddy, whom they can work with on this project and intermittently all semester long. Sometimes students start a class not knowing a single person-- this activity will change that. I believe that building classroom community is key to successful learning. This activity ensures that ev

Planning is a key component to good teaching. Get your school life organized with this editable planning calendar. To maximize space, this calendar shows school days only (no weekends). Small dots of color distinguish each month without using up your printer ink. I use one of these calendars for each of the classes I teach, plus one more to keep general school meetings and information organized.
