Moon Phase & Tide Flipbook

Created by

This activity takes the basic idea of a flipbook to show changes of moon phases due to the position of the Moon, and adds in the changes in tide ranges and types into one flipbook. I recommend using this flipbook after students have learned about the Moon's position and how it effects the phase on Earth. They will also have to know about spring and neap tides and their connection to the Moon's position. (I have included the Tide notes) The activity includes a blank page for copying, directions

Tide Graphing Project

Created by

This project was developed in order for students to graph the tidal changes, but in particular to compare the tidal ranges between different days of the month. Students are given the option of either using the provided data, or for extra credit downloading their own data from the NOAA website of anywhere along the coastal US. Students love the choice and can pick a location that either they have been to, or somewhere they would like to go. Students that struggle with graphing can use the provide

Phase Graph HW & Notes

About this Lesson: This set of notes and homework are about pure substances existing in different states of matter and the points of change. Students will analyze graphs of different pure substances and estimate their points of change from the graph. It also allows students to understand that each pure substance exists in different states of matter depending upon how much kinetic energy the particles have. (Students have a misconception that the word freeze only applies to water). It also shows

Season Hotel Project

I use this project to help students understand the seasons. They pick two locations to place hotels in order to understand how to get two of one season and what really creates the seasons. I complete this project after they complete the daylight graph (already posted for free!) and after they have taken notes on the seasons. Students are excited to select their own locations and to be able to pick anywhere around the world. I walk them through the project one step at a time. The temperature gr

Moonrise & Set Spinwheel & WS

This is a spinwheel that I created to relate the movement of the celestial bodies to the phenomena on Earth of "rise" and "set". Students create the spinwheel and glue it into their notebooks. The worksheet is designed to have the students use the spinwheel and relate it to ideas about Moon phases and the Sun, Earth & Moon relationships they have previously taken notes on. I have students work in pairs and then go over the questions together. I have included the answer key with the WS. I find th

Daylight Graph

This graph is the beginning of a project that students complete when they learn about the Seasons called the Season Hotel Project. (I will upload that next) This Daylight Graph shows length of day at different latitudes. I give this graph as a homework at the beginning of the unit on Seasons after starting in class. Students will construct the 8 line graph in order to see the changes in daylight across the globe and that the distance from the Equator will directly effect this. The daylight grap

Pendulum Lab, Analysis & Result

This lab provides students to determine which independent variable; length of string, mass of bob, or height of arc will determine the length of the pendulum's period. This lab is more complicated and I use it after they have analyzed labs with one and two variables. I also teach this lab toward the end of my unit on Physics after they have learned about force & motion, Newton's laws, Galileo's experiments with acceleration due to gravity, and potential and kinetic energy. The idea of independ

Season Orbit WS

This worksheet helps students to understand that a season - 3 months - is a chunk of the Earth's orbit. I have them put in the dates of the seasonal changes and then relate other important dates in our calendar to those seasonal dates. The questions help them to realize that dates such as their birthday are points in the Earth's orbit and that when they celebrate their birthday they are celebrating one full revolution around the Earth. Lab Report Plan Template

I developed this Lab Report Template in order to have students design their own lab report by developing their own purpose. I begin be offering a lab, such as what size crater is created when you drop a marble into a substance. Students then work in groups to determine their own independent and dependent variables in the boxes to the right. Then they can write their purpose and determine their hypothesis. In general, they complete the boxes, read the info in the arrows and then complete the part

About the store

Experience

Taught general science curriculum to 7th and 8th graders for the past 6 years. Before becoming a teacher, I was a field biologist.

Teaching style

My teaching style is very hands on and inquiry based, however, also relies on students reflecting on what they have learned. I believe that science is best taught when students put together pieces of the concepts leading to mastery through experience. I also believe that all science should be relevant to students lives. My lessons try to incorporate past experiences and prior knowledge into new understandings that they can take out into the world and apply to new situations.
