In 2024-2025 I am tutoring 2nd–8th grade, substituting K-12 and learning software development to create digital educational programs.
This project assesses students ability to draw rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids of given areas on a scaled grid. They will need to be able to use the area formulas to work backwards to find side lengths that fit the requirement for each animal and use the formulas to show that their area calculation is correct. A detailed MYP Criterion D (Applying Mathematics in the Real World) Rubric is included. I spent about 2 and a half 90 minute class periods on this project and many
The task: Draw 4 points such that when you connect each point to the other 3 points for a total of 6 line segments, there are exactly 2 distinct lengths of line segments. You must connect each point to every other point. I use this quiz as a first introduction to a Criterion D assessment. Prior to this we have class discussions about what it means to explain the accuracy and determine whether an answer makes sense in the context. When I give the quizzes back, I go through these examples to help students better understand what it means to explain the accuracy and determine whether an answer makes sense in the context. Includes bonus challenge question.
I use this quiz in the beginning of the year to introduce the idea of writing and testing conjectures/general rules. The next class, I go through these examples to help students better understand the difference between a specific statement and a general rule.
