I have been in education for 23 years! I taught math for 11 years, spent two years as a math coach, then I gladly returned to the classroom to be back with the kids! I now teach Math and Social Studies!
RECENT BIG UPDATE!! Survivor Information First, I am not even going to begin to take full credit for this. I attended an amazing workshop given by a teacher friend in my county. She used to have a book published with additional information but it is no longer available. I also did more research online after the workshop for more ideas. I did create all of these documents and have adapted Survivor for my classroom in different counties, grade levels, and school community demographics through all
In this project, students interview someone about how Math relates to their career. They could be a stay at home parent, a cashier, a doctor, etc... This project helps shed light on the ever important question- When will I use this?
A fun project I've used in middle school several times. This file is fully editable for teachers to customize. I provide four URLs to help find different mathematicians. TWO grading sheets are included- one for a poster and one for a PowerPoint/Keynote presentation.
This fun project covers 7th grade objectives from both Art and Math. I have done this as an extra credit project in 8th grade as well and have friends do it with 6th grade. Students will explore the concepts of space, area, and color.
Who doesn't love money? My students sure do!
I used this basic monetary system to reward students for good work and allow them to choose methods of extra credit. It is a simple program that the students love and I was able to keep up with. I wrote their name of their money (or had them do it) and then they had to keep up with it.
My students love these Mystery Puzzles and I finally learned how to make them, thanks to Lindsay Bowden (her link is in the product)! In this 6th grade assignment, the students will be practicing some skills they should already know from 5th grade. This could also be used as spiral review at the end of 5th grade!
My students do a Skills Check every week to help keep them sharp, previewing new topics using prerequisite skills, and spiral reviewing. This activity can get done independently or in a pair but keeps them up and moving around. It is also self checking because it will bring them back to where they started! I would print two sets and put one set in the hall and the other around my classroom. My students would see the sheets up and get so excited to do Math for the day! Stay tuned for more of thes
Fun Pi Day project incorporating the Pi symbol into famous works of art for an Art Gallery. I got the idea from a shirt I purchased that incorporated the Pi symbol into Van Gogh's "A Starry Night".
If you do this, I would LOVE for you to share your student's pictures on Twitter and tag me @mullen2math!
Hey teacher friends!
I hope you can find this helpful! I chose some buddy labels that highlighted key 8th grade vocabulary. I’ve left this as a Word Document so that you can edit it anyway you would like!
I passed out the sheets and then collected them after 20ish minutes. Later that night, I went through and just filled in names of people who still needed buddies for those labels. If someone still didn’t have a name for a label, I wrote in “Substitute Buddy” or “Pick a Group!” It didn’t take

Teaching style
I love collaborative work in my classroom. Students should be working together and talking together. In 2021, I began teaching for our NEW virtual academy and am loving that we are providing this to our students who need it.
