I have been in education for 23 years! I taught math for 11 years, spent two years as a math coach, then I gladly returned to the classroom to be back with the kids! I now teach Math and Social Studies!
RECENT BIG UPDATE!! Survivor Information First, I am not even going to begin to take full credit for this. I attended an amazing workshop given by a teacher friend in my county. She used to have a book published with additional information but it is no longer available. I also did more research online after the workshop for more ideas. I did create all of these documents and have adapted Survivor for my classroom in different counties, grade levels, and school community demographics through all
I used this set in my classroom and made a few small changes after seeing it in action. My students really enjoyed working in pairs to complete each station, rotating after 10-15 minutes in each station (time varied by class). Stations do not need to be done in order.
Each station comes with a sheet to place at the station as directions (I put mine in page protectors) and the activity to be completed. Between the directions and activity, the students will explore the different concepts and show
Hey teacher friends!
I have found that my students have a better understanding after this activity!
This is 2 part activity that could be done in a 60 minute block.
First part- Real Number Sort
- Give out the bags and tell students to sort the numbers as they see fit into the five categories.
- Check as they finish and remove numbers from wrong categories, but don’t tell them why. You want them to figure out criteria on their own and have the mathematical discussions.
Second part- Real Num
You can give a student a TI-83 graphing calculator but they cannot do anything with it unless they know how. This is a cheat sheet of important maneuvers using the TI-83 graphing calculator. Also included are 9 practice sheets (and answer keys) to help students get used to using the different functions.
Topics include: Reset, recall, delete, insert, graphing a line, zooming, intersection of lines, fractions and mixed numbers, exponents and roots, LCM, GCF, stats including graphing stats, permu
This PowerPoint is an intro lesson to factoring polynomial expressions involving GCF. It shows different methods for factoring terms, finding GCF, and ultimately factoring the GCF out of polynomial expressions.
In this project, students interview someone about how Math relates to their career. They could be a stay at home parent, a cashier, a doctor, etc... This project helps shed light on the ever important question- When will I use this?
A fun project I've used in middle school several times. This file is fully editable for teachers to customize. I provide four URLs to help find different mathematicians. TWO grading sheets are included- one for a poster and one for a PowerPoint/Keynote presentation.
This is my favorite bulletin board ever. I saw the idea on Facebook and recreated all the graphics. I found a few pictures of famous math and science people photshopped taking selfies to add to the board. I also made a Pi-rate symbol that was quite large and asked my colleagues to take a selfie with it. It is now in my classroom, where my students are encouraged to take a selfie with it. My students all have iPads so this is not encouraging phone use in the class or using any of their data.
Why
I use this Slope Match-Up as a review prior to a quiz on finding slope. It is also a mini-challenge in my Survivor Class management system. The picture preview shown is from the original hand written product but you will get a digital copy where everything is typed and the graphs are done on the computer, plus no mistakes.
This is great as a review and a quick formative assessment.
My students love any chance to work together! This challenge can be done in a couple different ways, both are included in my notes to teacher. I use this as one of the min-challenges in my Survivor Classroom Management way of life.
This fun project covers 7th grade objectives from both Art and Math. I have done this as an extra credit project in 8th grade as well and have friends do it with 6th grade. Students will explore the concepts of space, area, and color.
Looking for an activity to review data in 6th and 7th grade? Need something fun for after testing? Look no further! This has them building their own paper airplanes to throw. They'll measure and collect data for themselves. They'll collect data from friends. They'll create line plots, box plots, and calculate different measures of center and variability. Using this data, they'll answer questions. Fully editable by you to fit the needs of your classroom!
Who doesn't love money? My students sure do!
I used this basic monetary system to reward students for good work and allow them to choose methods of extra credit. It is a simple program that the students love and I was able to keep up with. I wrote their name of their money (or had them do it) and then they had to keep up with it.
My students love these Mystery Puzzles and I finally learned how to make them, thanks to Lindsay Bowden (her link is in the product)! In this 6th grade assignment, the students will be practicing some skills they should already know from 5th grade. This could also be used as spiral review at the end of 5th grade!
Hey Teacher Friends!
I used these notes the past year at the beginning of the year to help my students understand the concept and how to take better notes. I hope they help your students too!
This activity is great review and fun for the students. They end up doing several examples and analyzing the work of their teammates while having fun and learning to work together.
My students do a Skills Check every week to help keep them sharp, previewing new topics using prerequisite skills, and spiral reviewing. This activity can get done independently or in a pair but keeps them up and moving around. It is also self checking because it will bring them back to where they started! I would print two sets and put one set in the hall and the other around my classroom. My students would see the sheets up and get so excited to do Math for the day! Stay tuned for more of thes
Teachers: - This is a group work challenge for students. - Print one copy per group and laminate everything. Also print a copy of the answer sheet (second sheet) for yourself. - Cut out the squares from the second sheet and put into a small plastic bag. - Each group will get a blank board and a set of squares to put back together. - You can keep everything together to reuse each year in a gallon size bag! When I do this, I will start to give placement of pieces after about 15 minutes or after
Fun Pi Day project incorporating the Pi symbol into famous works of art for an Art Gallery. I got the idea from a shirt I purchased that incorporated the Pi symbol into Van Gogh's "A Starry Night".
If you do this, I would LOVE for you to share your student's pictures on Twitter and tag me @mullen2math!

Teaching style
I love collaborative work in my classroom. Students should be working together and talking together. In 2021, I began teaching for our NEW virtual academy and am loving that we are providing this to our students who need it.
