About the store
Teaching keeps me thinking, learning and growing and that is why I love it! I have been teaching for over 40 years with 21 of those years in a formal classroom and 19 years in extra-curricular teaching areas. I have taught Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Ecology, AP Environmental Science, Senior Project Class, GATE Science, SDAIE Integrated Science, and Physical Science. The majority of my classroom teaching has been in low-income high schools where most of my students are second language learners. I have also had the opportunity to help design and start a project-based learning, charter school in Clovis, California. It was a tremendous learning experience to teach in an innovative, project-based learning environment for the 8 years that I worked at this school. I learned how to write an integrated project that included English and two Sciences, kept students engaged and on task and had relevance to real-world experiences. This experience forever changed how I design my lesson plans. I work diligently to include real-world applications in as much of my teaching as possible. I appreciate what my students have taught me and I continue to learn from them. They have taught me why they join gangs, why it is often difficult to stay in school, why they drop out, and what helps them succeed in the face of very difficult situations. I love to teach because it is a dynamic, reciprocal relationship between me, my students and my colleagues where I continue to learn more and more every day.

Chemisty-"Real Life Chemistry" Project!

I wrote this project because I wanted my students to leave my chemistry classroom at the end of the school year with a full understanding that chemistry is fascinating, is important in "real life" every day situations and relates to everything in the world around them! While as chemistry teachers we try to do this all year long I wanted to end the school year driving this message home! This is a project where students choose a topic that they are interested in, generate a question about that top

Can not knowing how to do dimensional analysis create a life-threatening situation? Hook your students into wanting to learn dimensional analysis by starting this lesson with the video of the true story of Air Canada Flight 143's emergency in the air! UPDATE: Use this link to begin the Vimeo Air Canada Flight 143. The link on Youtube has been removed. https://vimeo.com/55800609 This engaging "hook" gave my students the "need to know" that helped carry them through the tough part of learning ho

Biome Project-Sell a Trip

Students "buy in" to this project right away because of the "sales" aspect. Some students have won the silent auction by selling a trip to what at first would seem like a "hard sell" biome, such as a hydrothermal vent or the desert. These student teams did a great job with the sales aspect while also integrating the necessary science content. Students are motivated to begin researching right away no matter what biome they draw. All students take notes on the provided note template during each

Chemical Bonding Game-Engage your students!

I love the Bonding Party game because after playing a few rounds students begin to say, "Oh, I get it!" That is very rewarding for me as a teacher and I'm sure is for you too! Students have fun learning why and how atoms bond. I created it when I realized that my students weren't really understanding this and why they should care! In this activity I've included a PPT guide that shows why atoms bond, two real-life examples of chemical bonding to help students understand why this is important a

Have you ever wanted to hold a debate with your students but you weren't sure how to go about it? I experimented over my teaching career with how to hold a successful class debate and modified my debate guidelines until I had just what I wanted. These guidelines will set you up for success because they are tried and tested! Students LOVE debating and become very motivated and engaged, especially if they have some input on the topic choice. I have included an optional scoring rubric, my rational

Hooked on Science? Is it Science or Magic? Three Scientific Investigations!

This lesson was a total blast to teach! The first graders loved it and they totally "got" the objective, which is all about having students understand that behind all magic tricks is some really cool science! I have also used all 3 of these activities at middle school and high school level. The primary difference is the depth of explanation of the science involved. That will vary depending on your students grade level and background knowledge and is easily adapted. One quote from a student tha

This Bonding Party Game is Part II of the original Bonding Party Game. I created this extension after the original game worked well with my students to help them understand the Octet Rule and how atoms bond. Since my students already knew how to play the game and had a lot of fun learning while playing, I realized that I could use time effectively by adding Part II. In Part II students build on their prior knowledge and add "types of bonds." In this game students will learn about nonpolar cova

Interdisciplinary Lesson-History and Science-Isotopes and King Richard III

What makes students want to learn about isotopes? This was a question I asked myself before I created this lesson. When it was time to teach about radioactive isotopes in my chemistry school year, the chemical and biological findings of King Richard III"s bones had just been reported in the news. I decided to use this as my "hook" to get my students interested in real-life chemistry connections. It was so interesting that I was hooked! I learned more about isotope ratios while I was preparing

Balancing Equations Race

This activity gets students thinking, laughing and learning all at the same time! Students work through the "puzzle" of why there are left over atoms when they make an "unbalanced" cellular respiration reaction "go" using hands-on, paper models. They then balance the equation, add the appropriate number of "missing" atoms and "voila," problem solved! I designed this lesson after realizing that the majority of my students did not fully understand what happens to atoms after they have reacted

Experience

Teaching keeps me thinking, learning and growing and that is why I love it! Teaching style

I believe in the adage, "Learn by Doing." I do my best to make sure that I set up a learning environment where my students are "doing" as much as possible and I am the "coach" who is there to support them and guide their learning. I must then be willing and able to step back and allow the students to have "some" struggle without jumping in too quickly to solve their problems. It is a delicate balancing act moment by moment to determine when to help and when to let go. I also teach in a style where I realize that I must "open" a student's mind to want to learn the material first, before I begin to teach; I am always thinking about what the "hook" will be. This is why I plan all of my lessons with a "mind opening" activity and/or with a game/contest that is motivating.
