Teaching students to count coins, the mats (both counted and blank) have students put the coins (not provided) to learn to count amounts to $1.00 for dollar coins, half dollar coins, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. This collection of data sheets that follow have been used with many students with disabilities. They test for basic skills in money, calendar, clock skills, and using a calculator. These can be administered at the same time or individually. Each test takes from 10- 20 minutes per student. Track your students' success and find out what they need to work on with regards to the skills related to money, time, and calculator skills.

Counting Hearts, estimating numbers, fractions of a set, money skills, word problems, and place value are all explored using candy hearts. Two different sheets allow students to explore these topics as introduced or reviewed by the class. Successfully used by students in first and second grade with applications as alternative assignments for students with disabilities. Included: concrete information for differentiation of these two different worksheets. Candy Hearts will need to be provided.

Much like our coin counters, bill counters seek to teach students bill combinations. Using up to 2 different bills and demonstrating a pattern for counting, students with disabilities in grades 7-9 have found these mats to be useful. Students have later demonstrated their ability to count bills correctly without use of mats. Suggested: print out each page on thick paper or place in sheet protectors to increase longevity of each mat.

For students who have anxiety around the different schedules that happen during the day, we have found that incorporating visual time helps cut back some anxiety. This also helps teach "How much time until" with reflection on the current time. Given both digital time and analog time, students can work on math/life skills to work on their anxiety. Teaching style

I'm the one that sort of sits back and watches things happen and tries to course correct as the day goes. I'm looking for ways to implement adaptations in a general education classroom and facilitating social interactions with the best technology solutions possible.

Additional biographical information

Renay H. Marquez is a paraeducator. In February 2012, she published ParaEducate, a book that describes the role of paraeducators in public classroom settings with tips for behaviors, academics, and directing social interactions for students with mild to severe disabilities. Renay has been in classrooms in junior high, elementary and high school with inclusive settings for students. ParaEducate was started to help teachers and paraeducators with the varied academic needs of students with disabilities. In 2023, Renay became a teacher for students with disabilities.
