This is an extensively aligned, 5th grade (though easily adaptable to other grades through grammar standards) Common Core writing project that involves extended editing throughout a semester or year. Students are excited about the "Superhero Stories" every year. This creative project draws in the reluctant writer. In this project, students will use the math computation and historical context of the Homestead Act of 1862 to calculate possible perimeters (fencing) for homesteads of 160 acres.
