This is an extensively aligned, 5th grade (though easily adaptable to other grades through grammar standards) Common Core writing project that involves extended editing throughout a semester or year. Students are excited about the "Superhero Stories" every year. This creative project draws in the reluctant writer.

In this project, students will use the math computation and historical context of the Homestead Act of 1862 to calculate possible perimeters (fencing) for homesteads of 160 acres. Students will use area, perimeter, arrays, factors, fractions, scale, and exact measurement of units to "prove up!"

In this project, students use electronic newspaper articles to gather information, summary, identify facts and opinions, compare and contrast, and identify cause and effect relationships about the wolves in and around Yellowstone National Park. A Google search will provide you with over 2,000,000 results for "Yellowstone Wolf Articles 2013." This is a very hot topic that piques student interest and aligns to Common Core informational text standards.

In this READY-TO-GO project, students choose a favorite song and find literary elements and parts of speech according to a rubric. An example is included with an answer key. Rubric is also attached.
This is a follow-up to the FREE Enlargement Enrichment project. All skills are applied from the first project with the addition of applicable math of state areas and population densities.
