Immigration Unit Interview Worksheet for Family History Presentation

Created by

In 2nd Grade, we learn about Immigration. We study Ellis and Angel Islands, the process to immigrate and become a citizen, and the reasons people immigrate. As a final project for the unit, students create a presentation (we use Google Slides) to present what they have discovered. I stress that this is to find what you know, not to invest in an ancestry discovery tool. Students vary with what they can access, and that is part of the fun. I've had families that came on the Mayflower and those

After studying Civil Rights and learn how grown-ups make a difference, my students learned about how kids are making a difference in the world, right now! We went to a website where there were many bios telling what kids are doing to make a difference in their communities and around the world. (kidsareheroes.org is not functioning anymore.) Here are 3 other websites that will work with the project.https://www.parents.com/toddlers-preschoolers/everything-kids/meet-10-kid-heroes-of-2016/https://ww

When we work out way through the Cycles Unit in Core Knowledge, we spend some time on Water Cycle. This experiment is fun and very visual for the little ones. I have used this with our 4th Grade buddies as partners and as in small groups as well. I've used this as an introduction to the water cycle and as an activity after we learned the steps. Both were fun. The experiment and the worksheet are included. Sometimes, you may find that a few extra drops of food coloring are needed, so the childr

This is a presentation for students to use individually, or as a whole class with the teacher guiding them. This can also be sent home as a homework assignment/project. They get to watch several videos, one per historical hero, and determine which hero is their favorite. Then they get to complete a two-part assignment. Rubric is included. This matches Core Knowledge standards for 2nd grade, but could be used for research projects on historical figures/heroes for many different grades. It can

During the winter holiday season, I like to have a gift exchange in my class. In the past, that has been riddled with kids over-buying, under-buying, or not buying at all. Emotions were high as they hoped the gift they chose would be good, and jealousy sucked the joy out of the moment. With the Secret Santa Project, kids send a Santa Letter to a Secret Santa that allows the gift they get to be tailor-made FOR them. Included are two Santa Letters, a detailed description of the Project, and a Res

When we were reading A Boy Called Bat, our class wanted a project to go along with it. In the story, Bat writes to Dr. Jerry Dragoo (an expert) to get advice regarding a problem he is having. Our class decided that would be really fun to write to someone we admired or who could help us solve a problem and see if they wrote back. We discussed that we might not get a response, but what if we did???? I used this presentation to guide my middle school students to do this independently; however, thi

Opinion Writing is tricky for littles ones. They all have opinions, but supporting their opinions with reasons requires support. After studying healthy eating, we used this brainstorming sheet and planning sheet to produce a well-supported piece explaining why they had the healthiest meal. It leads to some wonderful dialogue about what was actually healthy vs. what seemed healthy, as well as being an authentic topic to practice the skills of Opinion Writing. It includes a themed sheet for wr

This was a very fun lesson for my class during the month of October. I've used this structure for brainstorming, and with a little pre-teaching, it has gone well. ** I did discuss the amount of scary vs. gory I was willing to accept as a middle school teacher. That would vary if you are teaching younger grades. This would make a good class activity for younger grades to write a Class Generated Scary Story! The first day, they brainstorm the parts of their story in blue. Basic ideas, names, place

At the beginning of the year, and/or at the beginning of each grading period, this tool will help you and the students select goals for themselves. You may want to do a whole class brainstorming session about goals before giving them this, and you may want to give them one page at a time over several lessons. Included: Brainstorming sheet, graphic organizer for writing, final draft sheet, student rubric, and teacher rubric. These are great to post in the classroom, so students can refocus the

At the end of 2nd Grade- I wanted my students to set goals for next year that I can share with their new teachers. This product has a self-brainstorm page, a graphic organizer to help support paragraph formation, and a final draft sheet. (You can use whatever sort of paper you want.) I included 2 rubrics for grading (student & teacher.) They can self-grade, then you can grade if desired. I'm planning on giving it to their next year's teachers use it as a work sample and Get-To-Know-You piece.

This is a slideshow I used to teach these idioms; however, I also printed this out for the students to write their own sentences using each idiom. Then, they would draw a picture of what the idiom would look like in real life. This is the list from the Core Knowledge book. When teaching these, we read them aloud and discuss them. I give several examples of when I might use these idioms, and then I turn them loose to interpret it. Then, we move onto the next slide. I have allowed them to work a

When children independently read chapter books to prepare for their Literacy Circles, it is important to have a job to keep them both focused and responsible for the text. I like to print them out so that each chapter, the students have a different job, but you can have the child have the same job for the whole book if that works better. Once the kids meet, they will share what they completed for the chapter to fuel their discussion. This can be done independently or with a teacher to keep the

It promotes listening comprehension and gives the students a chance to make decisions about the Main Ideas & Details and Opinions being presented. (The students can also write their own opinions about what they are hearing.) Older students can read the text and complete the worksheet on their own or with partners.

I've used this as a whole class lesson and as a table group discussion activity. Some of the words created a deep discussion because it depends on HOW you use the words. This activity isn't meant to have only 1 right answer, but if they can defend WHY they put the words into either the Antonym or Synonym category, and it makes sense, then that is an acceptable answer. This is meant to create critical thinking, not as an introductory lesson for this skill.

Experience

I've taught 1st-7th grades and have been a Reading Intervention Specialist in my 15 years of teaching. I found that the grade level doesn't matter as much as the opportunities I have to mentor kids to find growth and success in their own lives.

Teaching style

I am a fan of using a variety of teaching styles to meet the diverse needs of my students. I often observe as I'm teaching and switch the delivery method if I see the current instructional strategy isn't working. I like kinesthetic memorization techniques (pairing movement to information) as well as story-telling to help explain a concept. Allowing students to investigate concepts on their own, as well as, come up with their own projects to explain their learning are also some of my favorite methods.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Feather River Teacher of the Year 2012

My own education history

I have an AA from Sierra College in Liberal Arts. I have a BA from Sacramento State University in Psychology with a minor of Criminal Justice. (More helpful than you might think!) I got my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Sacramento State University, as well. I have been trained in Love & Logic, Nurtured Heart, and Peer Coaching, and I was a BTSA Support Provider for many years.

Additional biographical information

I am a wife, mother, teacher, writer, and Crossfitter. Teaching has been the true calling of my life, and I am so glad I had the support of a great BTSA Mentor to help me on my way! After all these years, I still love teaching, and I'm also excited to start writing lessons for TpT!
