I am a permanent full time elementary school teacher. I have been teaching Grades 6,7 and 8 since 1999 with the English Public School Board in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I have taught every subject with the exception of Phys-ed.
I created this handout for my Grade 8 class to compliment the Pay it Forward movie. I uploaded the handout in Microsoft Word format so that you can customize the work to compliment the specific needs of your own class.
At the very beginning of the handout, I included a warm up exercise with a personal story that would provoke my class to think about generosity and doing good deeds for other people.

I've included a resource that I've used with my grade 7 and 8 classes which helps to develop critical thinking skills.
We read A Walk to Remember in class and also used the audio version from time to time. I asked the students to write personal responses in a journal. When I was pleased that the journal writing was done well, we used the attached exercise to develop some critical thinking. The journal writing was more of a summary of the text, but they weren't really telling me what they though
I use this activity to help students plan a map of a city or town that they will later draw on a poster board.
I have uploaded the activity in MS Word format so that you can change the activity to meet your own specific needs. The only part of the activity that can't be changed is the Employment Chart as it's an image.
I have included a short and long version of the evaluation for the prep work and a rubric for the poster board design. I usually photocopy all of the material and hand it out as
I used George Orwell's Animal Farm with my Grade 8 class as an Independent Reading Assignment and they loved the book! I used the attached study guide to evaluate their understanding of the reading.
The study guide is in Microsoft Word format so it may be changed so that you can adjust the material to meet the individual needs of your class. The guide is meant to be used as the students read the book in class.
As an icebreaker, I started the guide off with a letter from one of the characters
Included is a practice quiz AND a marked quiz for Grade 6 Patterning. The material includes answer sheets, score card, student survey questions, input/output charts, patterning rules, patterns in division, Venn Diagram, and some questions related to integers. I left the file in MS Word format so that you may easily format the material for your own needs.
The attached file includes material that can be used to assess Grade 6 Transformational Geometry. The quiz includes a prep sheet that provides students with an understanding of what to study and prepare for. The quiz is "ready to go." I've left the file in Microsoft Word format so that you can alter the material specific to suit your own needs. I hope that you find this resource beneficial!
This document provides instructions that would help students convert between mixed and improper fractions, simplify fractions, find equivalent fractions, add/subtract fractions.
The attached assignment with help students generate ideas that will facilitate in the essay writing process for topics that relate to George Orwell's Animal Farm. I have included a list of possible topics and a writing exercise that will service as a writing outline that the teacher may examine/evaluate prior to teaching essay writing.
I plan to upload a unit of study for the novel in the near future.
