Writing Linear Equations when given Slope and a Point

This is an animated powerpoint presentation I made for my class this year to introduce a method for finding the slope-intercept form of an equation when you only have the slope and one point. This method involves substituting the given information into y = mx + b and then solving for b. Using Point-Slope form could be introduced after this, but it isn't necessary if students can use this method. The first slide is a warm-up problem followed by a few review problems about slope-intercept f

This is an animated PowerPoint presentation that shows students how to extend the ideas from the distributive property to allow them to multiply binomials and eventually larger polynomials. This file also includes a printable notes sheet for students, which has all the problems from the presentation. This makes it easier for students to work along with you without having to take time copying the problems down from the screen. Methods shown include: Distributive Property Box Method FOIL Most o

Exit tickets are a quick and easy way to find out how well students have mastered a topic. Hand them out with about 5-10 minutes left in class and have students turn them in as their "ticket" to leave class. Often you can use the time between classes to quickly check over the answers to determine how well your students did and adjust your next lesson if necessary. Each page has 4 copies of the same question so you can easily make copies and cut them up to hand out to your students.

This file contains the detailed directions to the scavenger hunts I have made, as well as a recording sheet for student's answers! I am in the process of updating each of my scavenger hunt files with the directions and answer keys, but I wanted to put it on my store for everyone to easily access!

About the store

Experience

I taught Algebra/Geometry in High school for 4 years. I also have been teaching pre-AP Algebra and 8th grade Math in middle school for the last 6 years.

Teaching style

Technology heavy teaching style. I made my own virtual whiteboard with a Wii remote and I use powerpoint presentations and things like the eInstruction remotes all the time.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My students think I'm awesome, does that count? hehe And the old saying about always a bridesmaid and never a bride applies to me and the teacher of the year voting at my school. They like me enough to keep putting me on the ballot, but I never seem to win. Personally, I think it's because I'm in a portable building and they think less of me because of that. :)

My own education history

BS in Math from the University of Texas

Additional biographical information

I am a native Houstonian who is back home teaching math to at-risk kids. This is definitely NOT what I saw myself doing when I was a student, but I love every minute of it. I am also a father to an awesome, rambunctious 3 year old boy.
