Super Triangle Brothers - Translations in the Coordinate Plane

This lesson was originally made for 10th grade Geometry for our unit on describing translations of the form (x,y) ---> (x+2,y-4) and the like. In this lesson, the students have to navigate their triangle through a video game environment to reach the goal by using translations. The first part of the map has outlines to show where the triangle should be moving. In the second half, the students get to choose their own route to navigate the underworld and save the princess! Also, included

This worksheet is intended for use after students have learned the basics of writing equations in slope-intercept form. Students will: 1) Write an equation for a line with a given point and y-intercept. 2) Write an equation for a line passing through a given point with no set y-intercept 3) Estimate the slope of a line when given no grid lines on a graph. This PowerPoint file is intended to be printed as a worksheet rather than as a presentation.

This is sort of an exploration type activity to help students become more familiar with the window and trace functions of TI calculators. The questions are all application type problems and my goal was to create a worksheet that would let students go at their own pace without me giving direct instruction that was either too fast or too slow for them. File includes: 4 worksheets to be used with TI Graphing Calculator and detailed answer key. I found that letting students work with a partner

This was intended to be an introduction to graphing linear equations and function notation. Students create and graph linear functions to represent an asteroid falling to earth as well as functions for different missiles they can use to intercept it. The first file is the student worksheet and the answer key. Print the first slide for the students to use to show their work. The second file is an animated presentation that shows what the students are working out on their papers.

Equations of Parallel Lines Worksheet

This is an Algebra worksheet over finding equations of parallel lines. Some problems require students to find the equation of a line from a graph and others require students to use their algebra skills to change an equation from non-standard form into slope-intercept form. They then find a parallel line from a list of possible equations of lines. As students complete the exercises, their answers will fill in a joke at the bottom of the page. This makes the worksheet a little less boring

This was a worksheet I made as my 1st lesson on graphs of quadratic functions. I started out the lesson by showing students the basic form of y=x^2 equations and what they look like on the graph by doing the 1st problem. After having them graph it, there is no trouble finding someone who can explain/guess how to make the 2nd graph (y=-x^2) For the rest of the worksheet, I make sure they know how to use the table function on the calculator and then leave them to work in pairs or small groups.

Music Mania - Graph and Interpret linear functions

This is a worksheet with accompanying powerpoint presentation that deals with graphing linear functions and finding values for given functions. The scenario is based on online music retailers like "myTunes" "Amajon" and other silly names. I put one in there for myself, so you may want to change it to your own name. The last 2 pages are the student worksheet so those should be printed out and copied. They are not intended to be used as an on-screen presentation.

I made this worksheet for some practice early on in our unit on generating Equations (or Function Rules, depending on what your textbook calls them) from number sequences. Students get to choose which section of the worksheet they want to do for their assignment. Section A has 12 sequences of moderate to easy difficulty. Section B has 6 sequences but they may contain larger coefficients/constants, or be in different formats, or have decimals. Section C has only 3 problems but one has d

This scavenger hunt is meant as a general review over several of the key topics covered while teaching about graphs of linear functions. The slides are editable so you are free to change/remove/add questions as you like. I used this in my class last week and I figured it was about time I put something up here for free. Hopefully you find this useful before the Fall themed pictures become a little too stale. :) Can't get enough Graphing Scavenger Hunts? Here are some more!: 10 Graphing Line

This is a powerpoint presentation to accompany my free Mathamageddon worksheet. The worksheet is a powerpoint file that can be displayed with a projector as well, but I wanted something that showed the graph in more detail and with a more interesting way to show the graphs. This is just a short presentation that animates the meteor falling on the graph as well as the 3 missiles so students can verify that their graph is correct and to facilitate discussion about the results.

About the store

Experience

I taught Algebra/Geometry in High school for 4 years. I also have been teaching pre-AP Algebra and 8th grade Math in middle school for the last 6 years.

Teaching style

Technology heavy teaching style. I made my own virtual whiteboard with a Wii remote and I use powerpoint presentations and things like the eInstruction remotes all the time.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My students think I'm awesome, does that count? hehe And the old saying about always a bridesmaid and never a bride applies to me and the teacher of the year voting at my school. They like me enough to keep putting me on the ballot, but I never seem to win. Personally, I think it's because I'm in a portable building and they think less of me because of that. :)

My own education history

BS in Math from the University of Texas

Additional biographical information

I am a native Houstonian who is back home teaching math to at-risk kids. This is definitely NOT what I saw myself doing when I was a student, but I love every minute of it. I am also a father to an awesome, rambunctious 3 year old boy.
