This activity/presentation is adaptable for analyzing any well-written argumentative essay. I used this activity to introduce an exemplary student model of argument writing. The writing piece I presented was a 7th-grade argumentative student exemplar from Lucy Calkins' Writing Pathways text that focused on banning football from schools. It's a list of some of my favorite hook strategies, defined and with examples. **Note: I steer my kiddos away from using the rhetorical question because as 8th graders they should strive for more complexity and thought.
