Build a Beast Project - Unique STEM Version!

Created by
ShermanScience
Although the Build A Beast project is pretty popular, this version takes it up a few notches and has students design habitats for their beast, enrichment and feeding schedules, and a budget! In the traditional version, students will build a beast based on some environmental conditions and randomly selected adaptations based on the dice roll. They must draw their beast in the environment including their predators and prey. They must also write a written description of the beast and what makes

This is a delicious and fun way to discuss and teach how sampling methods can be used in math and science. This goes step by step and has students use data sets from other students as well. Students will make a bar graph as well as calculate averages and percentage errors and attempt to predict what should be given in any random bag of m & ms.

For this activity, students will get to look at a spinach leaf and an imprint from the top of a spinach leaf. Students should be able to see plant cells, chloroplasts, and stomata. This is a great step by step guide to help students learn about the structures of leaves to try and determine their function. To make the leaf imprints of spinach you will need clear nail polish, clear tape, and microscope slides. There are lots of opportunities for students to draw predictions and observations.

Orange You Glad to be Learning About Density?! 5E Learning cycle

Created by
ShermanScience
This punny take on a density lab uses an orange, and the parts of it to demonstrate how density works. The first page gives lots of detail about all of the specifics of the lesson sequence. This is always really a fun one because the students don't realize that the whole orange with the peel floats, but when the orange is peeled, the "naked" orange sinks and the peel floats. This leads really well into a discussion on the importance of life jackets!

This "ready to print" handout is great for when students are first learning how to use microscopes. This encourages them to think about why scientists use microscopes and allows them to draw and see the differences between using low, medium, and high-powered lenses side by side. This lab sheet contains spaces for 6 different specimens and contains one warm-up question at the beginning and two reflection questions at the end. The handout is front and back and will print neatly without the water

This student document (with some teacher notes in blue) takes the water drops on a penny experiment and makes that the center of a lesson cycle about surface tension, adhesion, and cohesion. This is ready to use and requires very few materials. Food coloring, paper towels, pennies, baby powder, dish soap, and pipettes are about all you need for this full lesson cycle.

This lesson includes teacher notes in red text throughout that probably should be deleted before printing for students. The first page is all information for the teacher and the other 5 pages walk students through a 5E Learning cycle. The Explore section guides students through an activity where they will cook hot dogs using different types of thermal energy transfers. The Evaluate section includes a quiz that is ready to go!

These clipart shapes are perfect to use for practice making models with students. These pieces are sized to be used as student manipulatives on their desks or printed and laminated with magnetic tape on the back for whiteboard use. For student use it is suggested to print and laminate these shapes, then cut them out to create movable pieces that can be written on with Expo Markers. This allows students to practice their modeling skills without the need to erase and bring in cooperative thinki

Each sheet of printed paper will have 14 tabs on it. These tabs make it really easy for students to flip to the correct unit in their notebooks. Cardstock use is recommended as is color coding your units.

This lab template is so versatile, and can be customized even further to make it exactly what you need it to be! This is a great way to train students on thinking of each experiment through a scientific lens. There are descriptions of what should be in each section so after some practice students should be familiar with the format and should be able to use it for any lab or experiment. Imagine not having to make a separate handout for each individual lab activity, it is a huge time saver!!!!

This is an organized way to keep track of all assignments that students are asking to be graded by the teacher. As a teacher, you will share this form with your students and they will submit the form for each assignment that they would like graded. There will be an option to create a Google Sheet within the form with your data to have an organized list of all assignments in one place. It's a win-win since the students can turn things in on their own, and teachers can find a list of all things
