How we Say it: Tone of Voice
Early product, but solid lesson-- I tidied it up a bit in 2025, still not 'cute' but really effective. I use this activity at the beginning of the year to set the ‘tone’ of my classroom. We talk about how the tone of your voice can change the meaning of your words. Students, in pairs, read phrases in different tones and try to guess the tone. A favorite creative thinking activity my students of all ages love! This goes well with the simple book, "It's Not a Box." However, it is not necessary as you can begin this by passing around a simple item and having students think of what else that item could be. I use a stick or a toilet paper tube, depending on the age. The printing format supports many levels K/1: Pages 1-14 It's Not A Box, drawings only. Post Winter Break: Find Someone Who Activity
A great way to have students share their activities over a break. This one is geared towards the winter break, but can easily be changed to reflect any break.
I don't do a lot of activities like this, but it helps with my classroom culture when we return as it allows them to talk during morning work. They want to talk when they return from break, so this gives them that freedom and makes it part of their 'school work.'

Proving Character Traits
We need to read about what a character says, does, and how others react to the character to prove his/her traits. I wrote this story with those ideas in mind. Placing the Decimal Multiplication Scoot
Quickly practice or review placing decimals using standard algorithm! Students are given products and have to scoot from desk to desk to figure out where to put the decimal. On the desks they'll read an equation, count the places past the decimal and place it correctly in the product.
Students LOVE scoot, I always play it with music. Dance when the music is on, scoot to a desk when the music is off!

Plant Unit Vocabulary Drag and Drop for Pre and Post Unit
This simple vocabulary drag/drop is a set of Google Slides that students will use before a unit and again at the end of the unit. Words are on the right and left of the slide (editable by the teacher), and students click on each to place them in one of three categories (I know it/own it, I sort of know it, I do not know this word). My Sudoku Book
I used this for my 1st graders, but would use it for all grades as a reminder. I printed this on separate pages. I then glued them as the cover and inside cover of a file folder so kids could keep sudokus. Together we filled in the boxes on the inside cover to remind them there can only be one of each in every Column, Row and Box. I use quadrant with 3rd-5th.

Estimation with Multiplication Musical Scoot
Students will let loose in between doing some quick reading and estimating of word problems. All problems are one or two step word problems involving multiplication with two or more digits. There are 30 problems, so you can play Scoot for a long time, or use half the set for another time.

Energy Conversions Table
This worksheet practices energy conversions which aligns with NC 7th grade science standards. Students are asked to consider every day objects as demonstrating a conversion of energy. For example a blender takes electricity and produces mechanical energy which blends your delicious smoothie. :-)

Additional biographical information
The name "Stuff and Things," is a tribute to my first 5th grade class. We discussed the need to be more descriptive and avoid saying 'stuff and things' in our writing and speaking and then it became our inside joke. So, since my creations do not fit nicely into one box, they are stuff and things.
I currently teach K-8 STEM, allowing me a great big swath of creative freedom. I've taught middle school science, 5th grade and 2nd grade. I started on TPT when we all only gave each other free resources and I loved the genuine sharing for our students benefits.
