My first year of teaching was 7th grade science in Waco, Texas. Then I got married and moved to Virginia, where I taught 7th/8th grade mathematics (pre-algebra) for 12 years in and out of a collaborative model. I then taught 6th grade math virtually. Now I'm a 6-8 math interventionist in Tennessee (and loving it!).
After we teach proportions, we teach the percent proportion along with its many applications. This is a homework package with 5 homework pages about discounts, tax, tip, and so on. One page is a mixture of proportion and percent problems so students must identify how to solve it.
Each page contains more than one homework so you conserve paper.
But you don't have to stop there! Use them as do nows (bell ringers/work), exit passes, or quizzes.
This is a 10-question color-by-answer worksheet about multi-step word problems that involve fractions, percents, and integers. It aligns with the Virginia Math 7 SOL 7.2. When you purchase this item, you are purchasing it for your own classroom use. If you wish to share it with your colleagues, please purchase additional licenses.
For this activity, I gathered a bunch of flyers from holiday sales and such. Then I gave the students the challenge of spending $500 on items they found in the flyers. I even gave them some coupons to use on specific types of items, i.e., 15% off any shoe or sock. They have a paper to fill out with the price, coupon/discount, and final price of the items they choose. If you have time, students can cut out the items they are purchasing and paste them to a poster with the coupons or informatio
This coloring worksheet includes proportional reasoning, which includes ratios, scales, proportions, and percents. It aligns with VDOE 7.3 2016. Each question is multiple choice, and the answer indicates how to color the picture. When you purchase this product, you agree to use it in your classroom only. If you want to share it with your colleagues, please purchase additional licenses. Don't forget to leave some feedback! It helps other buyers and earns you TPT credits for future purchases!
I like to create activities that use the wall space in my classroom so students can get up and move. For this activity, you post the 10 questions around the room and let the students fill in the answer document. I usually print the questions on colored paper so they stand out on the walls.
The questions all relate the the 8th grade Standards of Learning for Virginia. Some are multiple choice, some are multiple answer, and one is a graphing question. Each question is indicated on the answer
This homework package contains 4 different homeworks for your proportion unit. One homework has students create their own proportion word problem. Two have 6 proportion word problems. Another has some sentences to turn into ratios and 4 simple proportions to solve.
They don't have to be homeworks. They could be short quizzes, do nows (bell ringers/work), or exit passes!
This is a set of 10 task cards about percents. You have tax, tip, discount, and some NOT questions (so if you earn a 70% on a test, how many questions did you get wrong?). For the in-person students, you can post the questions around the room and the answer document for showing their work. For virtual students, you can share the Google Slides option for them to answer directly on the slides. When you purchase this product, you agree to use it in your classroom only. If you'd like to share it
I love proportional reasoning because there are so many ways to solve them! That means EVERY student can find a method that works for them. This worksheet practices the methods I teach in class with the idea that after practicing each one, students can then choose the one that makes the most sense to them. There is also a virtual option via Google Slides that you can share with your virtual/hybrid students. Remember, when you purchase this item, you agree to use it with your students only. If

Experience
My first year of teaching was 7th grade science in Waco, Texas. Then I got married and moved to Virginia, where I taught 7th/8th grade mathematics (pre-algebra) for 12 years in and out of a collaborative model. I then taught 6th grade math virtually. Now I'm a 6-8 math interventionist in Tennessee (and loving it!).
Teaching style
I prefer hands-on, discovery learning with lots of discussion, activity, and analysis. I'm a big fan of Jo Boaler and standards-based grading, so I prefer collaboration over lectures.
Awards & shining teacher moments
My principal has honored me with the Starfish Award for going above and beyond my duties.
I have also been awarded Teacher of The Week by current and former students.
My own education history
I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. I am certified to teach grades 4-8 in math and science in Texas, grades 6-8 mathematics/science and Algebra in Virginia and Tennessee, and I hold a Master of Education in School Leadership.
Additional biographical information
I have led professional development on creating a positive relationship with middle school students. I also created the activities and worksheets we used in our 7th/8th grade math curriculum. As a math interventionist, I use small groups and collaboration to address learning gaps and misunderstandings.
