My first year of teaching was 7th grade science in Waco, Texas. Then I got married and moved to Virginia, where I taught 7th/8th grade mathematics (pre-algebra) for 12 years in and out of a collaborative model. I then taught 6th grade math virtually. Now I'm a 6-8 math interventionist in Tennessee (and loving it!).
On the first day of school, teachers use that time to tell the students about the class and classroom. How about you gather some information about your students and their feelings about math at the same time? This purchase has two sheets available. Both cover questions like -- - evaluative questions about the student's perceived mathematical ability - questions about their mathematical mindset - personal questions about what makes them unique or what they intend to do after graduation Th
Want to make your first day or week with your students more interesting? Maybe you need an easy way to learn about your students while also creating a community of learners. This activity is for you! This worksheet provides all the framework for you to invest as much or as little time as you want into it. Here are some suggestions for how to use it -- 1. Give it as a Do Now on that first day so you can focus on attendance or seating charts. 2. Use one or more of the questions as closures to cla
This listing is 35 vocabulary words that align with the Math 6 Virginia Department of Education 2016 standards. Each word is a Frayer model that you can print for bulletin boards, filled in notes, or review cards. Blank models are also included in color and black-and-white so you can print outlines for your students or add vocabulary words. Page 2 has printing directions to help you decide what works best for you. Also included are each model as a jpeg to share electronically on your secure onli
I use this activity as an opening activity to dependent probability. I fill bathroom cups with 20-30 M & M's and then let the students work as pairs through the sheet. You could also get the small snack bags of M & M's and just hand those out. The first section asks for a guess of the probability for each color. The second section analyzes the probability of the candies in the cup (or bag). As students complete their color totals, we record them on the board to compare the diversity. The bac
After we teach proportions, we teach the percent proportion along with its many applications. This is a homework package with 5 homework pages about discounts, tax, tip, and so on. One page is a mixture of proportion and percent problems so students must identify how to solve it.
Each page contains more than one homework so you conserve paper.
But you don't have to stop there! Use them as do nows (bell ringers/work), exit passes, or quizzes.
This is a 10-question color-by-answer worksheet about multi-step word problems that involve fractions, percents, and integers. It aligns with the Virginia Math 7 SOL 7.2. When you purchase this item, you are purchasing it for your own classroom use. If you wish to share it with your colleagues, please purchase additional licenses.
For this activity, I gathered a bunch of flyers from holiday sales and such. Then I gave the students the challenge of spending $500 on items they found in the flyers. I even gave them some coupons to use on specific types of items, i.e., 15% off any shoe or sock. They have a paper to fill out with the price, coupon/discount, and final price of the items they choose. If you have time, students can cut out the items they are purchasing and paste them to a poster with the coupons or informatio
This coloring worksheet includes proportional reasoning, which includes ratios, scales, proportions, and percents. It aligns with VDOE 7.3 2016. Each question is multiple choice, and the answer indicates how to color the picture. When you purchase this product, you agree to use it in your classroom only. If you want to share it with your colleagues, please purchase additional licenses. Don't forget to leave some feedback! It helps other buyers and earns you TPT credits for future purchases!
I like to create activities that use the wall space in my classroom so students can get up and move. For this activity, you post the 10 questions around the room and let the students fill in the answer document. I usually print the questions on colored paper so they stand out on the walls.
The questions all relate the the 8th grade Standards of Learning for Virginia. Some are multiple choice, some are multiple answer, and one is a graphing question. Each question is indicated on the answer
This homework package contains 4 different homeworks for your proportion unit. One homework has students create their own proportion word problem. Two have 6 proportion word problems. Another has some sentences to turn into ratios and 4 simple proportions to solve.
They don't have to be homeworks. They could be short quizzes, do nows (bell ringers/work), or exit passes!
This is a BINGO for proportional reasoning (proportions, percents, similar figures) with a paper AND virtual option. The virtual link allows each student a unique digital copy that they can mark (and un-mark) virtually via a website. I made 28 questions so sometimes their answers won't appear on the card thus creating an additional degree of difficulty. I've included the questions and answers on a printable document, and also provided a copying link to a Google slideshow with the questions fo
This is an activity where students demonstrate that they can order real numbers, but it's not a boring worksheet. Students get strips of colored number sets they must cut out, order, and paste into the answer sheet. My students are always engaged when doing this activity. This activity includes 3 number sets and directions for how to print the activity for the students.
This is a great activity that lets students order numbers in a fun way. Students get strips of colored paper that have number sets on them. Each color is a different problem they must cut out and order. My students are much more engaged with this activity then they are with a worksheet. There are 3 number sets to order and directions for how to make the copies for this activity.
This is a set of 10 task cards about percents. You have tax, tip, discount, and some NOT questions (so if you earn a 70% on a test, how many questions did you get wrong?). For the in-person students, you can post the questions around the room and the answer document for showing their work. For virtual students, you can share the Google Slides option for them to answer directly on the slides. When you purchase this product, you agree to use it in your classroom only. If you'd like to share it
Number lines are another way to see the number sets -- natural, whole, integer, and rational. This number line uses colors to show which numbers on a number line represent each number set. It also includes labels for the colors and a black-and-white number line. When you purchase this product, you agree to use it in your classroom only. If you want to share it with your colleagues, please purchase additional licenses. Please consider leaving feedback about your purchase. I love hearing how teach
I love proportional reasoning because there are so many ways to solve them! That means EVERY student can find a method that works for them. This worksheet practices the methods I teach in class with the idea that after practicing each one, students can then choose the one that makes the most sense to them. There is also a virtual option via Google Slides that you can share with your virtual/hybrid students. Remember, when you purchase this item, you agree to use it with your students only. If

Experience
My first year of teaching was 7th grade science in Waco, Texas. Then I got married and moved to Virginia, where I taught 7th/8th grade mathematics (pre-algebra) for 12 years in and out of a collaborative model. I then taught 6th grade math virtually. Now I'm a 6-8 math interventionist in Tennessee (and loving it!).
Teaching style
I prefer hands-on, discovery learning with lots of discussion, activity, and analysis. I'm a big fan of Jo Boaler and standards-based grading, so I prefer collaboration over lectures.
Awards & shining teacher moments
My principal has honored me with the Starfish Award for going above and beyond my duties.
I have also been awarded Teacher of The Week by current and former students.
My own education history
I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. I am certified to teach grades 4-8 in math and science in Texas, grades 6-8 mathematics/science and Algebra in Virginia and Tennessee, and I hold a Master of Education in School Leadership.
Additional biographical information
I have led professional development on creating a positive relationship with middle school students. I also created the activities and worksheets we used in our 7th/8th grade math curriculum. As a math interventionist, I use small groups and collaboration to address learning gaps and misunderstandings.
