My first year of teaching was 7th grade science in Waco, Texas. Then I got married and moved to Virginia, where I taught 7th/8th grade mathematics (pre-algebra) for 12 years in and out of a collaborative model. I then taught 6th grade math virtually. Now I'm a 6-8 math interventionist in Tennessee (and loving it!).
This worksheet has the simple interest formula and what each variable stands for. The first section has a table to fill in for 5 problems. The second section has 6 simple interest word problems. It's great practice for simple interest, but it could also be used to study after it's been graded! This purchase now includes a digital version via Google Slides. The worksheet is broken up into sections for each slide and text boxes placed in each answer slot. Directions for the work are in the Not
I created this sheet for my students to practice mark-ups, discounts, and tax without the word problems aspect. Not every problem is looking for the final price. Some of them give the final price with enough information to find something else, like the original price or the amount of discount. It's only 8 problems, though, with 2 bonus questions.
The previous issue with incorrect answers has been fixed!
This quiz includes discounts, tax, and tip. There is one proportion problem just to see if the students are paying attention. Some of the problems include real coupons or sale excerpts. The last problem has a guest check that a waitress/waiter could have written. There are 10 total problems. Although I use this as a quiz, you could easily use it as a review.
This is a bundle of my simple interest products in one place to help you plan quickly. It includes homework, a worksheet with a table, and a worksheet with practical applications. When you purchase this product, you agree to use it in your classroom only. If you want to share it with your colleagues, please purchase additional licenses. I love to hear your feedback! Plus, when you leave feedback, you earn TpT credits towards future purchases!
This front and back worksheet contains 10 probability questions involving dice, spinners, marbles, etc. My students have to know independent and dependent probability, so some of the questions involve trying to get more than one outcome or removing something for the second outcome. Example question: What is the probability of drawing out a green marble, not replacing it, and then drawing a blue marble? It also contains one question given by the state of Virginia where the probabilities are g
This worksheet is for all those percent word problems that DON'T involve discounts, tax, or tip. It's like, "I set only 60% of 12 table settings. How many do I have left to do?" Some of the questions are harder than other because they involve a little subtraction to get the answer, but it's good practice. There are 9 word problems and a riddle to solve!
My students have to understand dependent probability with and without replacement. To help with the understanding of this, I created this activity with buttons. As students work through the activity, they can take out buttons as the problem states to see why the denominator changes.
You can buy a large container of buttons from Michael's or Hobby Lobby for pretty cheap. Then I put the same number of each color of buttons in snack-sized baggies to make the grading easier. My students work in
After we teach proportions, we teach the percent proportion along with its many applications. This is a homework package with 5 homework pages about discounts, tax, tip, and so on. One page is a mixture of proportion and percent problems so students must identify how to solve it.
Each page contains more than one homework so you conserve paper.
But you don't have to stop there! Use them as do nows (bell ringers/work), exit passes, or quizzes.
For this activity, I gathered a bunch of flyers from holiday sales and such. Then I gave the students the challenge of spending $500 on items they found in the flyers. I even gave them some coupons to use on specific types of items, i.e., 15% off any shoe or sock. They have a paper to fill out with the price, coupon/discount, and final price of the items they choose. If you have time, students can cut out the items they are purchasing and paste them to a poster with the coupons or informatio
This coloring worksheet includes proportional reasoning, which includes ratios, scales, proportions, and percents. It aligns with VDOE 7.3 2016. Each question is multiple choice, and the answer indicates how to color the picture. When you purchase this product, you agree to use it in your classroom only. If you want to share it with your colleagues, please purchase additional licenses. Don't forget to leave some feedback! It helps other buyers and earns you TPT credits for future purchases!
If you need rote simple interest practice, this worksheet is for you! It's a table of 15 problems with different parts of the formula missing. The last column is the total of the principle and interest. Answer key is included! When you purchase this product, you agree to use this in your classroom only. If you want to share it with your colleagues, please purchase additional licenses. I appreciate your feedback! In addition to sharing your experience with other teachers, you also earn TpT credit
This is a BINGO for proportional reasoning (proportions, percents, similar figures) with a paper AND virtual option. The virtual link allows each student a unique digital copy that they can mark (and un-mark) virtually via a website. I made 28 questions so sometimes their answers won't appear on the card thus creating an additional degree of difficulty. I've included the questions and answers on a printable document, and also provided a copying link to a Google slideshow with the questions fo
This packet includes three homeworks about simple interest. The first one just asks students to define simple interest and then state the formula and label the variables. The second sheet is 4 word problems involving simple interest. The third one is also 4 word problems. To save paper, the first homework has 3 on one page. The others have two on one page. These don't have to be only homework. They could be review sheets, pop quizzes, exit passes, or do nows (bell work/ringers).
I originally made these cards to go with some Connect Four games. However, you could easily give these to students to use as flashcards for extra practice. Or, if you purchased the game board I'm selling, you could use these cards to play it. I've found my students really like these kinds of cards because they get immediate feedback. Most of them create a pile of correct cards and a pile of wrong cards to go back to. They often boast of how many cards they have correct. There are 2 sheets of
This is a set of 10 task cards about percents. You have tax, tip, discount, and some NOT questions (so if you earn a 70% on a test, how many questions did you get wrong?). For the in-person students, you can post the questions around the room and the answer document for showing their work. For virtual students, you can share the Google Slides option for them to answer directly on the slides. When you purchase this product, you agree to use it in your classroom only. Experience
Teaching style
I prefer hands-on, discovery learning with lots of discussion, activity, and analysis. I'm a big fan of Jo Boaler and standards-based grading, so I prefer collaboration over lectures.
Awards & shining teacher moments
My principal has honored me with the Starfish Award for going above and beyond my duties.
I have also been awarded Teacher of The Week by current and former students.
My own education history
I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. I am certified to teach grades 4-8 in math and science in Texas, grades 6-8 mathematics/science and Algebra in Virginia and Tennessee, and I hold a Master of Education in School Leadership.
Additional biographical information
I have led professional development on creating a positive relationship with middle school students. I also created the activities and worksheets we used in our 7th/8th grade math curriculum. As a math interventionist, I use small groups and collaboration to address learning gaps and misunderstandings.
