About the store
Hello! My name is Alex Roman. I am a teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH). I have taught all ages from 3-21 and all grade levels. I spent two years as an itinerant teacher before becoming a classroom teacher. I taught middle school students (self-contained and resource) with hearing loss in grades 6-8 for 5 years, tried elementary students teaching a kindergarten through 5th grade Deaf and hard of hearing classroom, the majority of whom were also ELLs, and now I'm living my dream, teaching secondary students again, grades 5-12th grade ELA at a school for the Deaf! I have over 15 years of experience teaching students with hearing loss and more than 20 years of simultaneous experience working with English Language Learners. In addition to Deaf education, I also provide tutoring to English language learners of all ages and homebound services to students with chronic illness.

Teaching style

We use spoken English, American Sign Language, and Cued Speech in my classroom depending on the communication decisions made by each student's IEP team. My teaching style is heavy on game-based learning and very student led. I also rely on academic conversations to support student language development and content comprehension.

Awards & shining teacher moments

2012-2013 Teacher of the Year, April 2013 CEC presenter, Nov. 2011 Distinguished Climber for Collaboration, Aug. 2011 Classroom Library Reading Grant Recipient, Sept. 2016 Dollar General Literacy Grant Recipient

My own education history

I have an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in English language development. I did my BA in elementary education (K-6) and Special Education for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (K-12). I also have TESOL and TEFL certification.
