The information is taken directly from the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project Summer Institute. The presentation includes an activity where the presenter would actually do part of an interactive read aloud and have a group discussion with the participants for increased understanding.

This is a project for 3-6 students who are studying rocks and minerals in Science. Included in this detailed packet are planning guides for the collection of rocks, classifying them, identifying the rocks using field guides, and eventually displaying them. This even includes a rubric for scoring the completed projects. Students will love feeling like scientists while participating in this student-centered activity. Along with ideas, there is a page and a half of web resources for them visit for activities or more information.

It follows the Lucy Calkins' method of Writing Workshop and helps to review/refresh how the minilesson, independent writing/conferring, and closure would look and specifies details for each.

Students are to create an animal that is going to be strong and resilient enough to survive in that environment. They need to consider how this animal is going to stay warm or cool, what it is going to eat, how it is going to get its food and water, and how it is going to care for its young to make sure they survive.
