Nonfiction Text Features Quiz - Below Level

This Nonfiction Text Features Quiz was designed for 5th graders who may require accommodations in order to access grade level content. In comparison to the "Above Level" and "On Level" versions of this assessment, this version contains simplified wording, bolded words, "hints," and fewer answer choices on selected items. It still requires some "higher level thinking," as Special Education students and struggling learners are still expected to be able to complete the standards with "increased

Individual Behavior Passes

These individual behavior passes can be used as part of a behavior/incentive plan for individual students. The day is broken into 5 sections, which could be modified to fit the student's schedule. We allowed the student to choose a pass for the day. Throughout the day, his/her teachers would mark how they had behaved in each class. At the end of the day, if they had received enough "positive" marks, they earned the pass to keep and use. This can be phased/adjusted as the child's behavior im

"Character"istics

This is a cute little exploration of character development which would be appropriate for most any grade level where plot is involved in storytelling. The students can "doodle" on the stick figure at the top to show the physical characteristics of their favorite characters and can then find text examples to support in-depth character traits and descriptions. After completing the text and chart, they can analyze how their character changed throughout the text and how this was important to plot

FUN! FUN! FUN! Instead of just numbering students off into groups in the "old fashioned way," I have them close their eyes, and I put stickers/labels on their foreheads! When I say, "Go!" they start roaming the room, looking for their "matches." You don't have to put the stickers on their foreheads -- the possibilities are endless, but the kids do enjoy the silliness, and it is just an fun way to review basic skills while separating for group/partner work. Experience

I have 20 years of teaching experience, including resource instruction in K-6 (all subject areas) and 9 years of experience in collaborative settings (K-5). I have become quite adept at differentiating instructional materials in order to meet the needs of all types of learners.

Teaching style

I'd like to think that my years of collaborative experience have given me the best vantage point for learning and teaching imaginable. I have had the opportunity to learn (and steal ideas) from the best! I enjoy trying to challenge those who yearn for a challenge while also helping struggling (and average) learners to succeed.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I received the honor of "Teacher of the Year" for G.W. Carver and was the "runner up" for the City of Salem during my very first year of collaborative teaching in 2003.

My own education history

I majored in English at Virginia Tech and then obtained my Master's in Learning Disabilities prior to beginning my teaching career. While teaching, I obtained my certification in General Education, K-6, but I must say that the best of my "education" came from the collaborative setting! There is nothing more valuable than true teaching experience with amazing colleagues!
