Lab Report Form, Scientific process, Lucy Calkins Science Labs

I made this lab report to supplement the 2nd grade Unit 2 Science Labs and Informational Writing unit in the Lucy Calkins series. I felt that a form provided a good scaffold for the scientific process to writers who needed it. It follows the format of a good science lab report: 1. Hypothesis 2.Materials 3. Procedure (with space for drawing) 4. Results (with space for drawing) and 5. Conclusion. This fosters inquiry and problem solving skills and is perfect for individual or partner experiments!

Place Value: Adding and Subtracting 1, 10 and 100; Singapore Math in Focus

Students roll a dice (ideally 10 sided) three times to make a 3 digit number. Then they add 1, subtract 1, add 10, subtract 10, add 100, subtract 100, add 1,000 to the original number. This can be easily modified to make it four or five digit numbers. Great for building number sense and "visualizing." Use place value blocks to reinforce if needed!

Engage students with this independent dice game. They roll a dice 3 times for 3 digits and write the smallest and largest number they can make with the 3 digits. Then they subtract. A great center activity or independent practice without the boring monotony of premade worksheets. This also includes a 4 digit version. Happy rolling!

This is a 2-4 player game. Students advance through the game by practicing the concept of writing & solving addition problems (without regrouping.) This is a great way to reinforce this concept. There are game cards for 2 digit or 3 digit play--spice things up and add both sets of cards! Includes game cards, lesson plans, game board, and blank addition problem recording sheet. If you enjoy the game, please leave feedback. Thank you and have fun! :)

After reading the beloved book, Flat Stanley, students write stories about how they became flat! This download includes lesson plans for the project, planning sheet, and final copy paper. My students LOVE this project every year, especially seeing themselves flat and sharing their imaginative stories. :) If you download, please leave feedback! Thank you! (I do not own any rights to the book. This is just a resource you can use to support your book study.)

These 5 subtraction worksheets support the pictorial (drawing level) introduced after students have built the concepts with place value blocks, and before they are solving problems with numbers alone (abstract level.) This is excellent for reinforcing WHY we regroup!! Use these after you're done teaching the "hands on" for each concept. Also, great for enrichment/challenge level work! -1st page: reviews drawing to solve 3 digit minus 2 digit problems. Students just write the answer in the horiz

Print 1 grid. Have your class sign 6 random boxes (or 5, or 4 depending on size of class!) Then put the numbers 0-9 in a hat. Pick out the numbers one by one and write them above the grid columns. Repeat for the other side. This will give you where the scores fall. Then make a copy of the filled in grid for each child to take home as they watch the Superbowl! Use the ones place in the scores to see who wins what box. (Ex: Chiefs 21, to Eagles 28. You find where 1 and 8 meet, and that is the winn

In this hands on activity, students work in pairs or groups to count and sort frogs into a certain number of ponds, and determine if they divide equally. They they then write the division equation with remainders--if there is one. They record their information on the chart. I call this a "game" to my students and they have so much fun with it they don't even realize it's not about winning! :) This game/activity is appropriate for students learning about division and equal groups. I used this as

Perfect for Halloween, this comes with lesson plans, graphic organizer, and final copy paper. Students use Carl Reiner's book, "Tell Me a Scary Story...but not TOO Scary!" to create their own narratives about a time their imagination got away from them. Lesson plans are by the day, and can stretch up to 7+ days, or as little as 3 days. This is a GREAT project and my students really write wonderfully spooky...but not too spooky...tales from it! :) Enjoy!

Students create snowflakes out of paper (link to instructions provided) and then compare themselves to a peer. They work together to create a piece of writing about what they have found. Just as snowflakes are similar but different, so are we! This lesson plan can last through a week of writer's workshops, and is the perfect way to tie in snowy winter art with meaningful, enjoyable, CCCS writing. Enjoy! :)

Students learn about the complexity of human emotions through discussion, art, reading and writing. They will create an original piece of art like a scarecrow, bear, snowman, etc (anything with a face!) that depicts a certain emotion and use that as a jumping off point for writing and reading about emotion and feelings. There are plenty of chance for reading and discussing great books, writing, and thinking critically. My students LOVE this project. This download includes: -cross curricular les

I made this to go with a kit called "The Mall," which has a bunch of real little items in shops all labeled and priced. You could easily make your own mall by putting out a bunch of cards with item names and prices, and even jazz it up with clip art. (I bet someone else has a freebie of that!) Or make one large page of items with prices to display on your Smart Board. This download has 2 pages for recording. One is shopping for 4 people and adding the money spent, and the 2nd page is harder: sp

Help your students give feedback to each other with these sentence starters when they work in partners or as a whole class. Idea for group work... -Print one of these for every child's writing folder. Place in a plastic sleeve. As partners read their writing, the group has their feedback forms out so they can think about what they will say. Ask each child to give feedback...1 compliment, 1 helpful strategy. Encourage discussion! Happy writing!
