U.S. History ABC Booklet End-of-Year Activity

This is a fabulous way to end the year in your U.S. History classroom. Students recall what they have learned this year by creating a children's book of American History. For each letter of the alphabet, they come up with a person, place, event, or vocabulary word that applies to what they learned in your class. For example, A is for Abraham Lincoln. Then they create a sentence describing how this word is important to American History. Finally, they draw (or print) a picture relating to the word

Checkbook Math -- Middle School Behavior Plan with Personal Finance Skills!

Do you ever feel like tearing your hair out when spring rolls around? Looking for a fun way to teach real-life math skills? This behavior management tool is for you! It can be used on academic teams (teachers of the core subjects that share the same students) or in an individual teacher’s classroom. It’s most effective when used as a short-term management tool (I like to use it in the spring, after state testing until the end of the year), but it can be used year-round also. This is similar to

Texas History Unit 8: Civil War and Reconstruction Vocabulary Bingo

Texas History unit tests tend to have a lot of vocabulary. Many are words that are not social studies vocabulary, but uncommon language used in quotes and reading passages. My students were failing unit tests, not because they didn't know the material, but because they lacked the essential vocabulary. I have a word wall and my students are pre-taught some of the essential vocabulary through Frayer models, but I felt like I was not doing enough. That’s when I developed Vocabulary Bingo. Now you c

They must choose one of the Latin American countries they have studied and create a travel brochure for that country. The second project gives the student the role of a tourist in that country and asks them to cre

Vocabulary is so important to all subjects, but especially social studies where students encounter words they don't often hear outside of a classroom. This set of posters will help your students learn common vocabulary words in American History. The set includes 11 unit posters and 65 vocabulary words with color visuals. The backgrounds are white to conserve ink. I've also left the file open for you to edit, so you can add words you need in your classroom. I print these on 8.5x11 cardstock and

This testing strategy has been effective in my classroom, helping to increase state testing scores by 20% over the last three years. This strategy is most effective for science and social studies, where there are questions clustered around a topic or unit. It involves three steps, a "brain dump," "jumping" through the test, and "pumping" the question to improve odds of correct answers. A Good Student - Interactive Notebook Resource

At the beginning of the school year, my middle school students set up their Interactive Student Notebooks (ISNs). I want to set the tone in my classroom--that I have high expectations, but that I also believe asking questions and not knowing all of the answers are signs of a good student. In the midst of my back-to-school activities, I have my students create a circle map of "a good student." I make sure to point out that a good student asks questions, and then I have my students glue this hal

Teaching style

I am a very hands-on teacher who loves to bring fun and physical activity into my history classroom. We use Interactive Student Notebooks in my classroom to keep students organized and learning. I incorporate many History Alive teaching methods to my lessons throughout the year. Always learning and adapting, I try to add new "spice" to my teaching each and every year.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My school's Teacher of the Month in February 2012. I was also named Teacher of the Month in November 2013 and our district's Teacher of the Month in December 2013. I was later named the Mad Rock Teacher of the Month in January of 2016.
