The Island - film study and Ethics worksheet

The Island was a film study for my Ethics students in Years 11 and 12 Religion class. I created this worksheet to aide them in exploring the morality of cloning and the value of human life despite the corporate world wishing to exploit humanity itself. I had greater success teaching The Island rather than Gattica which had originally been the film study for this topic. Students really responded and had a depth of understanding the reality of manipulating human life for gains in an issue which

Just Like Heaven - Ethics Film Study

This is a fun film to study for end of life decisions! I designed the worksheet to go along with the Reese Witherspoon film "Just Like Heaven" which features a young woman whose spirit appears and talks to a man with unfinished business. It is discovered that she is in a coma and that her family are struggling with end-of-life decisions to take her off life-support. Suddenly the main character realizes she has a lot to live for but only one person is her advocate and nobody has a reason to liste

Experience

I began working fulltime at the age of 20 and have been working ever since with now over 10 years experience all throughout elementary and high school and across a wide variety of subjects including English, Art, Religion, Mathematics, Politics, Literature, EAL and History. I now have my own online tutoring business, with the main focus of English skills including ESL/EAL, History and Religion to students from Year 1 through to Year 12.

Teaching style

I am a believer in Classical Education, although I also think that learning should be... not fun, but enjoyable. Life isn't always fun, there are lots of responsibilities that we have that sometimes just have to be done before the fun but you can always choose to see the positives in life's experiences, and this is the life-skill I believe in teaching my students: it may not be your favourite activity, it may not be always be fun, but you will enjoy the rewards of your efforts so look for that silver lining!

My own education history

For the majority of my education, I was home-educated by a determined and resourceful single parent (who pushed me hard so that I finished school by a couple of years early). For my last year, I left Australia to finish my senior year/Year 12 at a small private school in Virginia USA. I moved back to Australia and graduated both with my Bachelor of Liberal Arts and my Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary - English/Religion) at the young age of 20.

Additional biographical information

Married and mother to one gorgeous son (not biased, I promise!), my transfer of career to an online presence helps me to utilise my time (no more travel time, yay!) to work efficiently in creating and delivering educational material.
