I use this to asses my students understanding of comparing and contrasting poetry. There are also elements of theme, central message, and point of view. The reading level of each poem is very low due to the purpose of this assignment. This assessment is at a third grade reading level.

This is a simple poetry unit grading rubric I use for my third grade students. They publish a poetry book and I grade each booklet using this criteria.

This sheet is part of a booklet that you can use to teach idioms over a week long unit or the entire school year. I usually allow my students to design their own cover page and print off ten of these pages per student. This is a non fiction article report I assign to my 3rd grade students every year! They love looking into current events online and in the newspaper for this activity. It is done half at school and half at home. I like to encourage conversation at home about the topics they read for this report. It is a 2 page report on a current event.

This is a word problem activity with 8 questions. Each question is written with PARCC style language. The students are asked to read and answer the word problems by showing their work and explaining their understanding. I use this tool with third grader to prepare them for the rigor PARCC language they will encourage on the assessment. I needed a way to organize all of the student passwords for each of my 25 students. I used many different formats over the years but I found this card to be the easiest for me and for my students. You can copy and past their username and password into each box then print and laminate the cards. I send one card home and keep one card at school in a basket we carry to the computer lab each week. This is a main idea and key details formative assessment I use with my ESL and Special Education students. There is very little distraction on the page. It is clear and the lines are large for large handwriting. It is simple but a simple way to support and assess your students.

This is an interactive journal entry. After teaching the initial lesson. This activity is fun and an excellent way to reinforce the terms: drama, dialogue, scene, act, script, stage directions, line. This is a Common Core aligned activity.

I use this worksheet as a tool in my fourth grade students ELA reference binders. We review the concepts of all three types of sentences by review the anchor charts at the top of the page. Then I give them time to work on the bottom section wither as a partner review activity or individually. It is an excellent and quick way to review the different types of sentences. Estimated time is 10 minutes of instruction and 10-15 minutes for students to complete the sentences for review.

This is a support I used when teaching the book, Mirette On The Highwire by: Emily Arnold McCully There are 10 questions about the contents of the book. This sheet is best used after teaching the book and allowing students to refer back to it with support from the text. This worksheet can be slimmed down for students who do not have the stamina to complete all 10 questions in one assignment. This assignment is appropriate for 3rd-6th grade students of all ability levels.

I use this note taking sheet to support y students in independent practice of RI3.8. After teacher modeling students are able to use this structure to show their understanding and comprehension of a non fiction text.

In this slide show, I have uploaded the Disney Pixar Short "Partly Cloudy" to use as an interactive way to practice and teach inference. This is a digital activity you can share with your students via google classroom or you can project it and teach it in the classroom face to face. This is a partner activity your students can do to ask and answer questions while they read a common text. This is an outline and an easy worksheet to copy and use with fiction or non fiction texts. I use this assessment with my third grade students at the end of our non fiction unit. It covers all of the skills I taught within the unit including: authors purpose sequence text features main idea and details point of view asking and answering questions vocabulary retelling It is in a word file so feel free to change it to meet your needs! The passage is at a 500 lexile level. So it would work great for any student who needs to be assessed at their independent reading level.

This is a third grade specific Common Core note I send home to parents a few times a year. I feel that this note makes the Common Core standards simple and straight forward. This note gives concepts, skills and ideas for parents to help their students engage at a higher level. This is a very brief overview of the Common Core. But I believe it is a "not so scary" look at the skills we are teaching at this level. I print it on colored paper and send it home at the end of each trimester. Enjoy

I use this after teaching both main idea and central message. Many students struggle with the different between the two concepts. I use this chart to model and show students that the stories events or their details really guide you to either a central message or a main idea. This chart can be used in many ways: small group time, independent work and assessment. This activity can be done with students from 3rd grade-6th grade. Enjoy!

This is a worksheet I use with my students as a review of Mood and Tone in a fiction story. This is a great reteaching lesson in small groups or as an assignment after a formal lesson.

This is a grammar choice board for upper elementary students. (3rd-6th grade) This can also be a review for special education or ELL students in the upper grades as well. This is a weekly activity that students can review and practice their grammar skills. I add this to my centers and allow students to complete this choice board once a month.
