The Standards-Based Classroom

In this open-ended math project, students choose a combo meal from a fast food place and use math skills to show whether ordering a combo saves money. Students learn more about what the distributive property represents by using visual and algebraic models to represent their group's food order. Students organize their work on Google Slides with directions and templates.

Do your students struggle to see how math is applicable in the real world?  In this open-ended project, students are challenged to research a topic of interest to them and identify some related mathematical elements.  Students use countable/measurable data to share their topic with peers. Through loosely guided research and teacher coaching, students must use critical thinking to find the math in the topics they love. This is a great ‘getting to know you’ project for math class.
