This is the complete unit! I have included four assignments (found poem, fact file, character "sketch", and playbill) that have students focus on different aspects of short stories with rubrics. Two comprehension reading assignments, two comprehension quizzes, definitions and a list of possible short stories. This unit provides a balance between engagement and comprehension.

Getting student’s to consider theme, characters, tone, mood etc. can be difficult when all they look at is the plot. Best way to have them look for the true meaning of a piece, feelings of a character, tone of a story by allowing them to compare it to music. Middle school students love their tunes and getting to create a sound track will get them talking! They need to justify why they are choosing the songs which not only helps them think about their choices, BUT it has them provide proof. H

Need your students to write a short story? Looking for something that will get them excited about it? Creating a graphic short story is often the trick! This assignment will have students plan and individually write their own short story on a topic of your or the class' choosing. They use short story language and are able to put those terms to use. This project encourages students to decide what events, symbols and quotes are significant in the novel they have completed. It is an excellent project to use when students are able to read multiple novels and you would like to have a common assignment.
