This simple assessment will help gauge if students can order the months of the year correctly, and if they can create and enter information onto a calendar, and read a calendar. Can see which students are performing above expected level by recalling or working out the days of months. (I always use the knuckles method with my students - they repeat the names of the months as they tap their knuckles or the gap between knuckles. The months on the knuckles have 31 days.) Students create questions about Australian Rules Football (AFL) football teams. After designing their question, they ask their class mates and collect the answers in a tally. This information is then draw onto a bar/column graph. I use this activity near the Grand Final on our Footy Colours Day at school. Teaching style

Students should have rich tasks that are fun and link their learning to solving everyday problems. Their learning should be challenging and deep. Not just simple methods to get "right answers" but to develop them as thinkers, able to solve problems in preparation for life-long learning.
