Jeopardy Math Review Grades 4/5

A fun way to review math. Included are fractions and decimals. Students can work in teams, and some may require scrap paper vs mental math, before they can answer the question. I am a huge fan of Jeopardy games in the classroom. Students will have fun while reviewing and it supports cooperative teamwork.

Area, Perimeter, and Budgeting: Create a Backyard Diorama

Given a budget and dimensions of a fictional "back yard", students will create their dream back yard. They must use the dimensions to find the area and perimeter, then they must shop. They have a budget, and must buy items (pool, swingset etc.) to put in their new back yards. Students not only must add the money, but they must calculate tax on purchases. When they plan it all out, they will build a shoe box diorama of their backyard using creativity and any materials they choose. After it is fin

Figurative Language Task Cards

These Figurative Language task cards include Idioms, Similes, Metaphors, and Personification. I have 32 task cards, and there are eight of each type of figurative language to practice. Included are student response sheets, answer key, teacher directions, and 8 x 10 signs for each type to post in the classroom. RECOMMENDED USE: Print the color task cards, laminate them for longevity (recommended), and place them in a jumbo baggie. Place the answer key inside an envelope so children can self mo

Color Coded Organizational Grouping Chart

This spreadsheet has ten sheets. There are instructions, then there are four sheets for four different sections, or classes of students. The last five pages are designed to print and give to students. They are mini schedules to remind students which group to report to on any given day. I have used it and it REALLY helps me keep classes, students, and student groups straight. I used fruit and veggies to name the groups. The student groups are apples, strawberries, bananas, grapes, and avocad

First Day of School Task Cards for Grades 3-5

It's always a nervous time for students when the school year begins. I have always had them do little icebreaker games. I wanted them to talk, walk around, and just relax. These 24 task cards can be printed and laminated, and then used again and again. They always have fun while learning that they have things in common with other students. Use these first day icebreakers to lessen the stress of a new year.

graphs and tables

Using frequency tables, data, and graphs such as Stem and Leaf plots, scatter plots, and Dot plots, students will read graphs, and they will create them. I took these 8 cards, placed them on colored paper, laminated them, and placed them in a jumbo baggie. They have become an item for my Math stations. They can be used with a teacher or independently. I hot glue clothes clips along my back wall. I then create practice baggies of work to do like this one, and the students can self help, or t

Homework Menu

Whether you use this as homework or classwork ,it gives students choices. They choose one item from each category and complete quality assignments each week. Students never have to get finished with work early and have nothing to work on. This is a time saver that self guides students and frees up the teacher to work with small groups of students.

Experience

25 years grades 1-6. Five years special education. Four years Math. Some years, I taught multiple subjects, others, just one. I have worked in two states, but primarily Texas. I work with a lot of ESL students, and GT as well. Very diverse groupings.

Teaching style

I believe in some form of direct teach, I do, we do, you do...but I also believe that students need to take new concepts and assimilate them into their world. Concepts become concrete when they use them, see a need for them, and practice using them.

Awards & shining teacher moments

4.0 GPA (Masters in Education) Published one children's book, a beginner reader. Wrote poems "Raining Cats and Dogs and other Figurative Language Poems".

Additional biographical information

After 25 years, I continue to evolve as a teacher. Simply put, "Times are always changing". With the use of technology to steal children's attention, it is making it harder and harder for us to get and keep their attention, and harder to make things relevant to them. Any time that we can get them using their skills in real life situations, especially if we can pull in technology, that's when the life time learning takes place. That's when the "ah ha" moments come. Also, let's face it...when students are so engaged in a project that you simply become the facilitator, then it makes our jobs easier as well. The only update I have at this point is the pandemic brought a lot of new challenges! When you can digitally download something and let students have access to that download in their own homes, it’s a game changer.
