This 2nd-grade math project-based learning resource is a great way to review second-grade math topics such as addition and subtraction of two and three-digit numbers, using arrays to learn repeated addition, comparing up to 3-digit numbers, adding and subtracting 10 using place value, and more. Take a Peek Inside the PBL Workbook!

  • Activity #1- Going on a Hike: Students practice adding and subtracting 2-digit and 3-digit numbers as they track water bottle levels and record the miles hiked by many different families. (3 pgs.)
  • Activity #2- Making S’mores: Students dive into repeated addition using pictures to start thinking about multiplication concepts as they place roasting marshmallows around fire pits. (3 pgs.)
  • Activity #3- Campsite Fun: Students use addition to interpret arrays of tents at each campsite, and solve word problems to interpret the arrays and push their thinking further. (3 pgs.)
  • Printable Game- Going Fishing: In this 2-player partner game, students practice comparing 3-digit numbers in a fun way! Each person flips over a card and places it on the map. Students then use greater than, less than, and equal symbols to determine the winner of the round. Whoever earns the most cards wins!
  • Student Self-Reflection: Students answer questions about how they feel they are doing with the math concepts practiced throughout this workbook. They discuss what they liked, what they struggle with, and what questions they have.

How to Use This Resource in Your Classroom:

Instructions:

  • Print and copy this workbook for each student. Save ink with the printer-friendly version included!
  • Use this activity for REVIEW AND PRACTICE after students have learned the content.
  • Students should be able to complete each activity in 20-30 minutes.

Activity Variations:

  • This activity is PERFECT for math centers! Students can work independently or with a small group.
  • Use this activity with a teacher-led small group for students that need extra guidance and support.
  • Assign this to students that are home sick or on vacation to encourage them to complete math activities while they are away from school.
  • Leave these activities for a substitute to do with students!
  • Have a teacher aide or parent volunteer work through problems with students that are struggling.

  • Students work through a combination of different 2nd-grade math standards to practice fluency and gain comprehension.
