This 2nd-grade math project-based learning resource is a great way to review second-grade math topics such as addition and subtraction of two and three-digit numbers, telling time, interpreting and creating bar graphs, comparing up to 3-digit numbers, and more. If you are looking for ENGAGING and LOW PREP immersive PBL activities for your students, then this resource was made for YOU! These project-based learning activities for second graders come in a printable workbook for students to do with a small group, as a whole class, or in independent math centers. Take a Peek Inside the PBL Workbook!

  • Activity #1- Tracking the Animals: Students will create and interpret bar graphs as well as add and subtract 2-digit numbers as they collect and represent data of the animals they see on the safari! (3 pgs.)
  • Activity #2- Taking Pictures: Students will add, subtract, and compare 3-digit numbers while solving 1-2 step word problems involving the pictures that they take to document their trip. (3 pgs.)
  • Activity #3- Riding in the Jeep: Students navigate a map of Africa and solve 1-2 step word problems using addition and subtraction of 3-digit numbers. They calculate the distance they travel over many different routes, as well as create a schedule of when they will be seeing each different animal. (3 pgs.)
  • Printable Game- Build-a-Safari: In this 2-player partner game, students draw cards to add animals to their safari board to earn points. Whoever has the most points after all the cards are gone is the winner!
  • Student Self-Reflection: Students answer questions about how they feel they are doing with the math concepts practiced throughout this workbook. They discuss what they liked, what they struggle with, and what questions they have.

  • Use this activity for REVIEW AND PRACTICE after students have learned the content.
  • Students should be able to complete each activity in 20-30 minutes.

Activity Variations:

  • This activity is PERFECT for math centers! Students can work independently or with a small group.
  • Use this activity with a teacher-led small group for students that need extra guidance and support.
  • Assign this to students that are home sick or on vacation to encourage them to complete math activities while they are away from school.
  • Leave these activities for a substitute to do with students!
  • Have a teacher aide or parent volunteer work through problems with students that are struggling.

  • Students work through a combination of different 2nd-grade math standards to practice fluency and gain comprehension.

I LOVED this resource. Was able to do this will all different levels of kids finishing their work. Some of my speedier kids still had to work hard and loved trying to get the answers correct, and my students who worked slower still enjoyed all of the activities that are offered!
