This 2nd-grade math project-based learning resource is a great way to review second-grade math topics such as addition and subtraction of two and three-digit numbers, bar graphs, comparing up to 3-digit numbers, measurement with a ruler, and more. Take a Peek Inside the PBL Workbook!

  • Activity #1- How’s the Weather?: Students create and interpret bar graphs as they track the weather at the beach and solve word problems using the data they collect to plan their vacations and pack their bags. (3 pgs.)
  • Activity #2- Which Beach is Best?: Students will solve word problems to compare, add, and subtract 3-digit numbers and decide which beach they will visit for their vacation. They analyze factors such as distance from home and the cost of flights to plan their trip. (3 pgs.)
  • Activity #3- Sandcastle Contest!: Students measure sandcastles using inches and centimeters (ruler provided!) to compare them and choose a winner for the contest! They answer word problems and interpret the data they collect. (3 pgs.)
  • Printable Game- Searching for Shells: In this 1-4 player game, students build fluency as they practice adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. They will lay out the shell cards face-down and pick up two at a time looking for a problem and an answer that matches. Whoever has the most matches at the end wins! 
  • Student Self-Reflection: Students answer questions about how they feel they are doing with the math concepts practiced throughout this workbook. They discuss what they liked, what they struggle with, and what questions they have.

How to Use This Resource in Your Classroom:

Instructions:

  • Print and copy this workbook for each student. Save ink with the printer-friendly version included!
  • Use this activity for REVIEW AND PRACTICE after students have learned the content.
  • Students should be able to complete each activity in 20-30 minutes.

Activity Variations:

  • This activity is PERFECT for math centers! Students can work independently or with a small group.
  • Use this activity with a teacher-led small group for students that need extra guidance and support.
  • Assign this to students that are home sick or on vacation to encourage them to complete math activities while they are away from school.
  • Leave these activities for a substitute to do with students!
  • Have a teacher aide or parent volunteer work through problems with students that are struggling.

  • Students work through a combination of different 2nd-grade math standards to practice fluency and gain comprehension.
