WHAT'S INCLUDED? (PRINT AND DIGITAL)

Game 1: I'm Bigger! No, I'm Bigger!

Students find the area of each rectangle. Then, they put an arrow next to the rectangle with the larger area.

Game 2: Shade It In

Students change the size of the colored box to show the area at the bottom.

Game 3: Find an Area Of...

Students put a circle on the model that shows the area correctly.

Game 4: Count It Up

Students find the area of the shape by counting the unit squares. Then, they type the answer in the yellow box.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT:

There are 11 problems included in each of the 4 games (total of 44 questions).

Digitally: The first problem is always an example for students so they know what to do. I would recommend completing 5 questions during your lesson together and assigning the other 5 for students to complete independently.

Print: Print the task cards out and put them in a math center. Have students record answers on the recording sheet provided. Students can use the self-checking answer key to check their work. You can choose between the color and black and white option.

Aligns with Common Core 3.MD.5:

  • Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.

Aligns with Common Core 3.MD.6:

  • Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).

Aligns with Common Core 3.MD.7:

  • Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.

This aligns with 2nd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 2.9F: use concrete models of square units to find the area of a rectangle by covering it with no gaps or overlaps, counting to find the total number of square units, and describing the measurement using a number and the unit

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.6C: determine the area of rectangles with whole number side lengths in problems using multiplication related to the number of rows times the number of unit squares in each row
  • TEKS 3.6D: decompose composite figures formed by rectangles into non-overlapping rectangles to determine the area of the original figure using the additive property of area
  • TEKS 3.7B: determine the perimeter of a polygon or a missing length when given perimeter and remaining side lengths in problems

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.GR.2.1 Explore area as an attribute of a two-dimensional figure by covering the figure with unit squares without gaps or overlaps. Find areas of rectangles by counting unit squares.
  • MA.3.GR.2.2 Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths using a visual model and a multiplication formula.
