Description

Now updated with a digital option! The digital option is a Google Form.

Will your class escape in time? Oops! Your students have accidentally set their time machine back to prehistoric times. They are now roaming around with dinosaurs. This isn’t even the bad news though, because they have somehow lost the time machine! To make it back home, students must solve a string of clues and math problems hidden throughout the room. This is a review game for the concepts taught in 3rd grade, under the domain of Measurement and Data. If your class has never played an escape game or breakout game before, I suggest playing as a whole class for the first time.

**Versions with and without QR codes included.

This is an interactive game where the students are timed. Students try and solve clues and math problems to breakout and escape the classroom. You, the teacher, can decide how much time your students have to complete the task. I will suggest 45 minutes, but it is up to your discretion. You can project a timer for your class, or put one somewhere for all the students to see, so they can keep track of how much time they have left to complete their task.

This is similar to a scavenger hunt where students will be moving around the room, looking for clues to unlock their envelopes (I have included riddles and suggestions on where to hide each clue). To unlock their envelopes, students will need to solve math problems. A paper is provided so students can show their work for each problem. For many of the questions, students must have an answer that matches one on an envelope. If the answers do not match, they can’t open or “unlock” the envelope, and must rework the problem.

*Everything is included, however teachers must provide their own envelopes.

I give step by step instructions on how to set up the game, including pictures! This is sure to capture the attention of your students.

Topics covered include:

Telling and writing time

Picture graphs

Measuring and estimation

For the digital option:

Technology Requirements

  • A Google Drive account
  • If sharing with students, a Drive account that is linked to student Google accounts
  • Can be shared/delivered on Google Classroom
  • Only need access to Goggle Drive--no outside links to worry about!

This escape room can be used with iPads, chrome books, laptops, and desktops as long as your students have access to Google Drive or Classroom on a device. The escape room is on a Google Form. Students must answer the questions correctly to advance to the next section, and eventually escape.

I used this during my student teaching in 3rd grade and they absolutely loved it! We used this right before MAP testing to go over most of the standards that some students were struggling with. After each group finished we went over how we got the answers and it really helped them see where they went wrong. Definitely recommend this product!!!

Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units-whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
